Pokemon GO isn’t just about going on a quest to catch ’em all, you’ll also be helping your team take control of the Gyms dotted all around the world. In order to do so, you’ll need to know a little bit about Gym levels and what they are. Let us give you a quick rundown.
Gym levels can be found by tapping on your nearby Gym. Just below its name, you’ll see the level. The Gym level determines how many Pokemon the team that is in control of it can have stationed there. For example, a level two Gym can only have two Pokemon defending it, whereas a level four Gym can have four.
In order to increase a Gym level, when your team is in control of the Gym you simply have to battle and defeat the Pokemon that are there. This will help raise the Gym’s Prestige, and with enough Prestige, you’ll raise the level of the Gym. It’s important to note here that you’ll earn more Prestige if your Pokemon’s CP is only just higher than that of the Pokemon defending the Gym, and even more if your Pokemon’s CP is lower than the defender’s. We’ve included a chart below of how much Prestige you need for each Gym level.
Level | Prestige |
1 | 0 |
2 | 2000 |
3 | 4000 |
4 | 8000 |
5 | 12000 |
6 | 16000 |
7 | 20000 |
8 | 30000 |
9 | 40000 |
10 | 50000 |
On the other hand, if the Gym is controlled by an opposing team, you’re going to want to drop the Gym’s Prestige and level so that you can take control of it for yourself. To do so, all you need to do is defeat the Pokemon that are there. For each Pokemon that you defeat, you’ll lower the Gym’s Prestige, meaning that even if you don’t defeat every monster in your first attempt, you can help to weaken it for your teammates. Once each Pokemon has been defeated the Gym’s level will drop to zero and will be free for you to take control of.
