Pokemon GO: How to Get Rare Candy

This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

Candy plays a central role in Pokemon GO as it is needed to power up your Pokemon in order to make them stronger. This isn’t the first time it’s has appeared in the games, as Rare Candy is a staple of every core game in the franchise. However, Rare Candy as it was in the mainline Pokemon series, a method of leveling up, doesn’t exist in Pokemon GO. Instead, each Pokemon has a specific candy tied to its family.

There are a couple of ways in which you can obtain candy in Pokemon GO. The first is to catch the Pokemon associated with the candies you want. For instance, if you need Pidgey Candy to evolve or power up, just go out and catch any member of the Pidgey family (Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Pidgeot) which will net you three candies. You can also transfer Pokemon to Professor Willow in exchange for one candy.

Candy for rare Pokemon are naturally more rare. To get some, you’ll want to level up your trainer. Doing so will increase your chances of encountering a rare Pokemon. Other methods that help are using Incense, Lure Modules, and Razz Berries to make encountering and catching Pokemon easier. As you catch them, you’ll be able to loot their rare Candy and transfer them for a few more.

The last method would be to rely on Eggs, particularly those with the larger distances (5km and 10km). When you hatch a Pokemon in one of those, they tend to come with much more than just the usual three.
