To the uninitiated, the thought of Mortal Kombat 11 having a story and an ending worth explaining might seem silly. After all, when the average person/gamer thinks of the series, they just think of controversial violence and fatalities. Not only is that not the case, in fact, one could make the argument that the best part of Mortal Kombat is its story and lore. We’re going to explain the ending of Mortal Kombat 11 and what it could mean for the franchise going forward.
This is going to very obviously be super, super spoilery. This article is only for people who A: already beat the game and are looking for additional clarification on what the heck is going on at the end or B: people who don’t care and want to be spoiled.
If the above two cases don’t describe you, please turn away now so we don’t ruin what is an excellent plot for you.
OK, let’s begin.
Mortal Kombat 11’s Ending Explained
OK so congratulations! You took control of the Fire God Liu Kang and through the combined power of Raiden and Liu Kang, the new Fire/Thunder God hybrid was able to smash Kronika into little pieces and stop whatever her, likely evil, plans were for the fate of all the realms. At the very least she was going to snuff out Raiden, which isn’t cool, so it’s good thing that we stopped her.
Still, the damage is done as the timeline is pretty messy now and things need to be reset regardless… just not in the way that Kronika had in mind.
Raiden reappears and is now in mortal form. He is no longer needed as Earthrealm’s guardian and he is officially passing that honor to Liu Kang, his apprentice and friend.
Raiden encourages Liu Kang to reset the timeline. Kang is initially hesitant, as it’s a major undertaking, but Raiden believes in him and suggests that he picks someone to be by his side and aid him. Liu Kang whom, even in god form, still has a major crush on Kitana, chooses her.
Together they agree to reset and reshape the world in a way that allows mortals to choose their own path. They know that there will be strife still, and that new villains will eventually rise, but at least all the realms and their inhabitants will have the freedom to chart their own destiny without Kronika interfering.
Liu Kang and Kitana then embrace as the world begins to reset…
What Happens Now in The Next Mortal Kombat?
Honestly at this point the series could really go anywhere. There is a canon back door for NetherRealm to just plant themselves anywhere in the Mortal Kombat timeline for their next game as it appears this current one has reached its end.
There will probably be a few constants. It would make sense for Raiden and Liu Kang to still be swapped in roles with Liu Kang now being Earthrealm’s immortal protector. Likely Kitana will have a role as well as she was chosen to be by his side.
After that though, your guess is as good as ours. Personally a revisiting to where the series first started would be pretty neat to see now that the series has a renewed focused on story telling, and certainly has better visuals than back in the Genesis days, but we’ll have to wait and see.
