Minecraft Ender Dragon Respawn Guide and Coordinates

You will have everything you need.

To respawn the Ender Dragon in Minecraft, place four crafted End Crystals on the flat cardinal edges of the bedrock exit portal at the center of the End dimension. This action triggers a reconstruction sequence that rebuilds the obsidian pillars and resurrects the dragon, requiring no dragon egg to complete.

Required Materials and Preparation

To successfully prepare for the ritual, set the game difficulty to Easy, Normal, or Hard, as the boss will not spawn on Peaceful difficulty. Acquiring the necessary materials requires traversing multiple dimensions to gather specific resources.

Secure and Collect the Dragon Egg

Before initiating the ritual, it is vital to secure the Dragon Egg to prevent its permanent destruction. The reconstruction sequence will completely delete any blocks in the space directly above the central bedrock pillar, meaning leaving the egg there will erase it forever on Java Edition or risk losing it to teleportation bugs on Bedrock Edition.

To collect the egg safely without it teleporting away, strike the egg once to force it to teleport to a flat surface of End stone. From there, dig two blocks beneath the egg, place a torch directly under the solid block supporting it, and break that block so the egg falls onto the torch and drops as a collectible item. Alternatively, place a piston adjacent to the egg and activate it with a lever to push the egg off its pedestal, causing it to drop safely.

If using Bedrock Edition, be aware of a notorious portal entity bug. If the egg or any other item accidentally falls into the active exit portal, the game engine glitches those entities to an extreme vertical coordinate of Y = 32766, causing them to despawn. To recover the lost egg, quickly navigate to the pause menu, select Save & Quit to Title, and reload the world. This action forces the game engine to recalculate entity positions, instantly teleporting the floating egg down to a safe height of Y = 512 at the Overworld world spawn point.

Craft the Four End Crystals

Naturally occurring End Crystals on top of the obsidian towers cannot be mined, collected, or harvested because they are highly volatile entities that detonate instantly upon receiving any damage. You must craft four new crystals manually using a standard crafting table.

To compile the ingredients, open the crafting table menu to access the 3×3 grid. Place one Eye of Ender in the exact center slot, one Ghast Tear in the bottom-middle slot, and seven Glass Blocks in all remaining slots. Repeat this process four times to obtain the four required crystals.

Position the Crystals on the Exit Portal

Travel through the stronghold portal to reach the End dimension. The exit portal is a bowl-shaped bedrock structure that always generates at the absolute horizontal origin of the dimension, centered at X = 0, Z = 0, typically around Y = 64. Once you successfully defeat the Ender Dragon, this portal activates.

To start the ritual, place one End Crystal on the middle bedrock block of each of the four flat sides of the portal frame. The game engine verifies crystal placement using precise cardinal offsets:

  • North side crystal: (0, Y, -3)
  • South side crystal: (0, Y, 3)
  • East side crystal: (3, Y, 0)
  • West side crystal: (-3, Y, 0)

If the exit portal’s bedrock frame has been broken or modified, you can still trigger the sequence. Simply place four obsidian blocks at these exact cardinal offsets and position the End Crystals on top of them. The game engine’s internal checks will register the placement, generate the summon sequence, and completely reconstruct the original bedrock portal structure upon completion.

Stand Clear of the Pillar Regenerations

Placing the fourth crystal triggers a cardinal raycast that initiates the reconstruction sequence, instantly disabling and removing the active portal blocks to prevent escape. Beams of light will shoot from the crystals toward the tops of the 10 surrounding obsidian towers to regenerate them one by one. This process causes a powerful explosion at the top of each pillar that will destroy any player-placed blocks, regardless of whether TNT explosions are disabled in your world settings.

The portal reconstruction sequence also deletes all blocks placed within the area extending one block above the bedrock edges and two blocks above the portal’s spawning plane. To avoid lethal blast damage and block deletion, retreat at least 15 blocks away from the central coordinates immediately after placing the final crystal. Ensure you remain within a 192-block radius of the coordinates (0, 128, 0) so the chunks stay loaded, allowing the sequence to finish successfully and grant you the related advancement.

Master Platform-Specific Fighting Mechanics

The mechanical behavior of the summoning sequence and its related entities varies significantly depending on your game version. Knowing these differences will help you survive the battle and maximize your rewards.

MechanicJava EditionBedrock Edition
Trophy Egg DuplicationWorld generation is strictly limited to one Dragon Egg per worldAffected by bug MCPE-51345, which incorrectly spawns a second egg upon defeating the first respawned dragon
Explosion Block DamageThe mobGriefing gamerule has no effect, so End Crystal explosions always destroy surrounding blocksSetting the mobGriefing gamerule to false successfully prevents End Crystal explosions from destroying terrain
Shield ProtectionPlayers can fully absorb the blast damage from an End Crystal explosion by blocking with a shieldShields do not reliably block End Crystal blast damage or kinetic knockback
Portal TeleportationNon-player entities pass through the exit portal and teleport safely to the Overworld spawn pointEntities are glitched to extreme vertical limits, causing them to despawn
