Brewing in Minecraft leads to a variety of different types of potions players can use in order to heal, buff, or damage characters.

You’ll need to collect a few things before you can even start about brewing, though.

Brewing Stand

The first thing you’ll need to do is head to the Nether. The majority of the items you’ll need to get started can be found here.

Once inside, gather these three ingredients:

  • Nether Wart – Mushroom found in Nether fortresses, growing on soul sand.
  • Soul Sand – Brown blocks that look like dark sand,
  • Blaze Rods – Rods that drop after killing Blaze enemies

Now that you have all of the ingredients to get started, open your crafting table. Place three cobblestone blocks in the bottom row of the crafting grid and a single blaze rod in the middle quadrant.

You’ve now created a brewing stand.

Next, create glass bottles by placing three glass blocks along the middle row of the crafting table.

The second to last step is to create blaze powder by placing blaze rods in any of the crafting table squares.

Lastly, gather the potion modifiers and secondary ingredients you wish to use to create your potions and fill up your glass bottles with water.

How to Brew in Minecraft

Now that you have everything you need to make these potions, place the glass water bottles into the three slots of the brewing stand. Add Nether Wart to the top of the brewing stand and blaze powder on the left.

These create Awkward Potions that you’ll need to serve as the base for all sorts of potions. Place the potions back into the brewer and add the secondary ingredient.

Once it finishes, you’ve successfully brewed a potion! Keep in mind there are A LOT of different potions to be made, so keep your eye out for special ingredients while roaming about.
