Hyper Light Drifter’s money is pretty important in helping you progress in the game. Any upgrades or new abilities you want to learn will have to be purchased with Upgrade Bits which are made out of four Gear Bits. The only problem is, these aren’t as easy to find as you might have been hoping for.
With a little bit of a nudge in the right direction, however, you’ll be finding more Gear Bits than you can shake a stick at. You just need to know how and where to get them from. So let’s take a look at the best ways to get money in Hyper Light Drifter.
Get Exploring
It may seem pretty self-explanatory but exploring the world of Hyper Light Drifter will reward you with countless Gear Bits just waiting to be found. We’re not just talking about wandering down that path clear in view, either. No, we’re talking about that invisible path that has to be activated by hitting that switch that’s hidden behind a tree.
Not many of Hyper Light Drifter’s secrets are right in front of your face. Instead, the game expects you to walk into countless trees, search for hidden tunnels in walls, and see what that random switch does to get those sweet Gear Bits.
As soon as you start taking a little more time to be inquisitive about your surroundings, you’ll find yourself making more and more Upgrade Bits than you could ever have dreamed of before. Just make sure you spend them on the right things!
Smash Every Crate
Just because some of Hyper Light Drifter’s treasures require you to search the most hidden away of places, doesn’t mean all of them are. Sometimes, the most useful items can be found hiding right in plain sight. When you’re playing Hyper Light Drifter, you’ll often see crates lying around the world. While it’s normally plain to see which ones contain Health Packs and which contain Gear Bits, what isn’t so clear is what hides behind them.
In numerous places, smashing a bunch of crates huddled in a corner will reveal a Gear Bit crate that you desperately need for that next upgrade. It’s not always going to turn up the goods, but for the short amount of time it takes, it’s definitely worth doing.
Enemies
Occasionally on your adventure, you’ll come across some enemies more powerful than others. These guys, and it seems to be completely random, can drop Gear Bits. As I said, there doesn’t seem to be a pattern to it, but when you spot enemies with larger health bars than most others, you’re likely going to get rewarded for taking them down.
The same applies to when you come across areas full of different enemies. As you slash your way through countless enemies, more often than not, one will randomly drop a bit of sweet upgrade money. We advise taking care of the other enemies around you before picking it up, but don’t forget to pick it up once you’ve finished slicing and dicing your foes.
Bosses
Bosses are the surefire way to get Upgrade Bits. At the end of each of these tricky fights, you’ll not only be rewarded with a new gun but also three Upgrade Bits too. These will tend to be found on the floor around the bosses corpse once they’ve been defeated. Just make sure to have a good look around to make sure you’ve grabbed them all before moving on.
Of course, defeating a boss is no easy task and so you’ll need to make the most of any Upgrade Bits you already have to your advantage. If you’ve stocked up on a few already and you’re struggling to take down a boss, head back to the hub area and grab some upgrades before heading back in. Sometimes it’s just that extra little boost you need to defeat these titans.
