To obtain plantable Ancient Seeds in Stardew Valley, find the dry Ancient Seed artifact and donate it to Gunther at the Pelican Town Museum to receive a viable seed packet and the permanent crafting recipe. The fastest way to obtain this artifact early in the game is by farming bugs and grubs between floors 15 and 29 of the Mines.
Farm the Mines for the Ancient Seed Artifact
The absolute fastest, zero-capital path to acquire the initial artifact in Year 1 is to execute a repetitive combat loop in the early floors of the Mines. This landmark entrance is located in the Mountain area north-east of Pelican Town, situated between Linus’ tent and the Adventurer’s Guild.
To execute this loop efficiently, perform the following steps:
- Enter the Mines and interact with the elevator on the back wall to descend directly to Floor 15.
- Sweep the immediate floor layout for white crawling Grubs and flying Bugs. Grubs possess a 0.5% chance to drop the artifact.
- Use a weapon with medium or high knockback to pin crawling Grubs against solid rock walls. This prevents Grubs from fleeing to pupate into immune cocoons and emerging as aggressive Cave Flies.
- If no insects spawn or once they are cleared, do not waste time mining stone. Walk to the floor ladder or take the elevator back to Floor 0.
- Take the elevator to Floor 25, sweep for insects, and return to Floor 0 to reset the layout generation.
- Repeating this cycle daily will yield dozens of insect kills. Slaying 80 cave insects also completes the Monster Eradication Goal at the Adventurer’s Guild.
Donate the Artifact to the Museum
Do not sell the dry, brown Ancient Seed artifact, which has a base value of only 5g. Instead, take it to the Pelican Town Museum, located in the extreme southeast corner of Pelican Town, south-east of Clint’s Blacksmith shop. The building is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
- Walk into the building and approach the wooden counter where Gunther stands.
- Press the action button to talk to Gunther and select the “Donate to Museum” option from his dialogue menu.
- Place the Ancient Seed artifact on any open grid tile on the library shelves.
- Exit the placement screen, interact with Gunther a second time, and select “Collect Rewards” to receive one pack of plantable Ancient Seeds and the “Ancient Seeds” crafting recipe.
In active patch version 1.6.4, an automated catch-up system was added. If the museum rewards menu is closed before collecting the recipe, the game automatically restores the missing recipe to your inventory upon loading the save file. Once learned, this recipe converts any future raw artifacts into plantable seeds for free via your crafting menu, allowing you to make seeds.
Use Alternative Exploration Channels
While exploring the valley, players can multitask to find the seed while attempting to gather other resources. The exact probabilities and unlock parameters across alternative acquisition paths are listed below.
| Method | Probability | Location and Landmarks | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fishing Treasure Chests | 0.7% to 0.8% | Any open body of water | Fishing Level 2 or higher |
| Artifact Troves | 3.7% | Clint’s Blacksmith (East Pelican Town) | Trade five Omni Geodes at Desert Trader; pay 25g to Clint |
| Tilling Artifact Spots | 0.7% | Cindersap Forest or Mountain area | Hoe tool (elevated rates in Winter) |
| Cutting Foliage | Variable | Prehistoric Floors (Skull Cavern), Volcano Dungeon | Scythe or Sword weapon |
| Deconstructor | 100% | Qi’s Walnut Room (Ginger Island) | Purchase machine for 20 Qi Gems; process one plantable seed packet |
Scale Production and Multiply Your Seeds
If combat drops fail, players can construct a Seed Maker to bypass the random-number generator entirely. This refining machine is unlocked at Farming Level 9, or acquired as a room reward for completing the Dye Bundle on the Bulletin Board.
To craft a Seed Maker, open your crafting menu and combine 25 Wood, one Gold Bar, and 10 Coal.
Processing any standard crop inside the Seed Maker takes 20 in-game minutes and has a 0.5% probability of outputting a plantable Ancient Seeds packet instead of the crop’s normal seeds. To scale this efficiently, plant and process massive quantities of high-yield crops like blueberries in Summer or cranberries in Fall.
Once you harvest your first Ancient Fruit, place it back into the Seed Maker. Each processed fruit yields an average of two plantable seed packets (ranging from one to three seeds).
Be aware that as of update version 1.6.3, plantable seed packets have been permanently removed from the Traveling Cart’s inventory pool. Checking the Traveling Cart south of the farm in Cindersap Forest on Fridays or Sundays will no longer yield this shortcut, making self-replication necessary. Since they take 28 days to mature outdoors and die in Winter, focus on unlocking the Greenhouse to grow them year-round. Note that Ancient Seeds cannot be grown in Garden Pots, making tilled soil the only viable medium.
