Map Changes

The latest update for Fortnite is out, and there’s a lot to go through, so here’s a look at what’s new in Fortnite Season 6. The likeliest change that you’ll notice right after you jump out of the battle bus is the map. Every new season of Fortnite brings about some significant alterations to the map, and Season 6 is of course no different.

One of the first places you’ll probably want to check out is Loot Lake, the reason being that there is now a floating island in the center.

Other altered locations include the corrupted areas spread throughout the entire map. What’s cool about these areas is that it is where you’re most likely to encounter the new Shadow Stone item. Shadow Stones can be both a help and hindrance, so travel to these locations at your own peril.

Other Fortnite changes include a new corn field (possibly alien related?) and a haunted castle. Spooky!

Pets

Pets have been staple features in MMORPG games for a long time. Some of them act as cute little creatures, while others can even attack for you. Some shooter games have incorporated animal buddies before, and now they will be able to join you on the battlefield in Fortnite Season 6. This is definitely one of the biggest additions when it comes to what’s new in Fortnite Season 6.

Unfortunately, the Fortnite pets don’t actually have any impact on the gameplay. You can’t order your dog to go and zap someone to sleep like in Metal Gear Solid V. Instead, they just serve as an adorable cosmetic item. Similarly to other cosmetics, you can earn them through passing certain tiers with the battle pass. It’s certainly a nice change of pace from the standard clothing, emotes, and so on and so forth that we’re used to.

Shadow Stones

Unlike pets, the new Shadow Stones do have a direct impact on the gameplay of Fortnite. Not only do Shadow Stones complement the new dark theme of Fortnite Season 6, they also act as consumables. They can usually be found around corrupted areas of the map, and using one will bestow you with many cool buffs.

Using a Shadow Stone will apply Shadow Form on you —a form that has both its strengths and weaknesses. The main weakness is that you won’t be able to use weapons. You also become faster and lighter, with the trade-off that you’re much more visible to the enemy while moving. When stationary, however, you become completely invisible, which could be useful to avoid a big fight that is going on. Shadow Form also allows access to the Phase ability, which lets you teleport a short distance and fade through objects.

Weapon Changes

In terms of changes to Fortnite specific weapons, there really aren’t too many in Fortnite Season 6. Double barrel shotguns have seen a big nerf in damage, and the dual pistols will have a reduced floor loot drop chance, but that’s about it for the guns.

There has also been a slight change to the way that momentum works on grapplers, and the charges have been reduced from 15 to 10.

It’s also that time once again where we say goodbye to some weapons as they are locked away in the vault. Starting today, we will no longer be able to find impulse grenades, suppressed submachine guns, light machine guns, bouncers, and remote explosives. There are certainly a few useful weapons being locked away there. All we can do is hope that we will see them again soon.

What’s New in Fortnite Season 6

New Skins and Cosmetics

New battle pass, new cosmetics. If you’re planning to pick up the Fortnite Season 6 battle pass, then you’ll now be able to unlock a whole host of new skins and cosmetics. As always, progressing through the tiers by simply playing the game will net you a bunch of items that you can equip on to your character.

The Fortnite Halloween spirit is in full force with this season’s battle pass. From Werewolf and Van Helsing costumes to bat gliders, this is certainly a season for goth kids and Ozzy fans.

Also introduced for the first time in Fortnite is pets. From the looks of the trailer, these adorable little friends join you by hopping into your backpack. Among the first that you can collect are a dog, dragon, and chameleon.

Storm Circle Changes, Controller Bindings & More

The storm will brew in a slightly different way in Season 6, as there are a bunch of different changes to the phases of the storm. The wait time of every safe zone has been reduced, so you have less time to gather equipment before you have to begin worrying about the storm. On the other hand, the shrink time of every safe zone has increased, giving you more time to haul ass away from the storm.

Epic have also introduced a nice quality of life improvement to Fortnite: custom controller bindings. If you’re not feeling the default button layout, you can now change it to your fancy in the Custom menu.

There is also a change to how matchmaking works in the PS4 version of Fortnite. If you’re using a keyboard and mouse to play, you’ll automatically be placed into the PC matchmaking pool. This makes it so that players are more likely to start a match with an even playing field.
