How to Claim a Workshop & What it Does in Fallout 76
Workshops are one of the many valuable tools in Fallout 76, as they’ll let you build and salvage valuable material. Unlike Fallout 4, you’ll have to do more than simply find a Workshop though. This guide will show you is how to claim a workshop, what they are, their benefits, how to build them, and much more.
Fallout 76 puts a much larger focus on survival than past installments in the series, even if it is soft survival. As such, knowing how things work and their benefits are going to be one of the first things you’ll want to learn in the game.
Claiming a Workshop
The most important thing you’ll need to learn about Workshops in Fallout 76 is that they must be claimed. In order to claim one, you’ll have to clear the area of all enemies and creatures.
Once the coast is clear initially, you can activate the Workshop, but it is going to cost you. The amount of Caps you pay varies depending on location, but every Workshop will face contention.
Once you activate a workbench, a flag will begin rising, signifying your progress. Hostile Players in the area can contest your claim, meaning you have to drive them off or kill them to finish.
A.I. enemies also return in waves, similar to an Event. If you fail to drive them away, you’ll need to retake it from them in order to claim the area.
Once claimed, you can start building. Just beware that the claim is temporary, so keep an eye out for possible contention.
What Are Workshops
Now that you actually have the ability to use it, let’s explain what exactly Workshops are for.
These Fallout 76 crafting systems contain resources you can extract by building Collector objects on them. These work when connected to power and can be found under the Resources tab of the Building menu.
Over time, Collectors will add valuable resources to their inventory, ending when they are full. To prevent enemies from stealing from them, you can craft locks and build defense turrets.
Depending on the Workshop’s location, you’ll get specific rewards and materials. These are indicated on the map, listed when the cursor is placed over the Workshop’s location icon.
It is important to look at what Workshops grant what resources, as each contains benefits specific to different goals.
Workshop Benefits
Depending on where you go, this crafting system will net you quantity and quality items you won’t find anywhere else in the Wasteland, saving you time and effort.
An example of this can be found in a Workshop based out of a food packaging factory. Since you always have to eat and food increases your health, the benefits of receiving food from it are self-explanatory, as you can never have too much food reserves in Fallout 76.
Again, Workshops can center around other valuable items, like Medicine, Ammo, and even Fusion Cores.
One of the biggest benefits of Workshops is that they have their own pool of resources to pull from. That means that you don’t have to use your own material, but you still get to keep anything that you create when using it.
Building Workshops
In order to reap the rewards of Workshops in Fallout 76, you’ll need to understand how to build them correctly. As we stated before, you’ll need power in order for things to run. This means that the more generators you have, the greater the output.
Each location has different power requirements, meaning that you’ll have to invest the budget in generators to get things going. If it needs 20 power to operate, build four generators that have an output of five power each.
Generators will produce resources hourly for as long as the workshop is claimed.
Connect the generator to whatever machine that your Workshop focuses on and it will start creating the material. You can go into the menus to specify which specific resources you’d like machines to produces as well.
It is important to remember that Workshops are also not the same as the C.A.M.P feature in Fallout 76. Since they are only temporary resource points, you aren’t going to want to waste your budget and materials investing in things to build the base long term.
So instead of building too many turrets and walls to keep things out, plan depending on your situation, as it is likely that someone else will inherit the Workshop soon anyway.
That’s all you need to know about how to claim a workshop, what they are, their benefits, how to build them, and much more in Fallout 76. For more tips and tricks for holding your own out in the West Virginian Wasteland, take a look at out our Fallout 76 wiki.
