Fallout 76 is unlike any other game in the series, as the RPG ventures into the unknown lands of online multiplayer. As a result, there are a lot of mechanics in this installment that aren’t the same as previous games in the series.

Most of the changes occur due to the limitations the game faces from having an always online structure. Permadeath is one of the known Fallout features that suffers due to this structure.

In past games, permadeath has allowed players to test their limits, as they can attempt to beat the game using a survival-focused, one-and-done playstyle. You can’t turn this mode on in Fallout 76 though.

Softcore Survival Mechanics

Instead of permadeath, the game will be going with a more softcore version of survival. When you die, you’ll automatically be given a prompt to respawn. The game’s map will be brought up, allowing you to respawn at any locations you’ve discovered on the map.

The catch with respawning is that the further away you are from where you died, the more Caps you’ll have to pay to spawn at that location. You can then return to the location you died to pick up junk items.

Junk items are the only items you’ll drop when you die in Fallout 76. Junk items are important for crafting objects and equipment but aren’t nearly as vital as guns, ammunition, and health supplies.

While this means that dying from griefers isn’t going to be the end of you, it should be noted that other players can take your items before you do if you don’t arrive in time though. Having to combat and strategize against other players like this is just one of the many unique things that Fallout fans are going to have to get used to with this online always RPG.

All in all, it’s reassuring to know the game won’t be too difficult to enjoy even though it’s always online and has PvP elements. On the other, the lack of even having the option for permadeath is going to be a letdown for hardcore fans of the Fallout series.
