What the Fallout 76 Map Size Is & How Long It Takes to Walk Across

Fallout 76 marks the iconic franchise’s transition from a single-player to multiplayer RPG experience. You’d have thought that would make the world bigger, and you’d be right. But by how much? Here’s how big the Fallout 76 map size is & how long it takes to walk across.

Casting our minds back to Microsoft’s E3 2018 presentation, Todd Howard had claimed Fallout 76 was four times the size of Fallout 4. We’re not quite so sure about that after conducting our own research.

As you can find out in this post that compares the two game worlds, there doesn’t seem to be a great deal in it. Fallout 76 is certainly a little larger, but four times? Surely not.

So how long does it actually take to cross? We recorded ourselves running at full sprint from one side to the other and clocked in at around 21 minutes. Check out the video below:

So what are the key takeaways here? Well, it’s never going to be an exact science when you have to occasionally stop to shoot enemies and then patch yourself up from the damage as we did. But we can still draw a few conclusions.

If you’ve checked out our comparison with Fallout 4, you’ll have discovered that the times really aren’t so dissimilar. Fallout 76 is certainly bigger, with one YouTube channel recording around 15 minutes to sprint from one end of Fallout 4’s map to the other.

Is that really likely to equate to “four times” the size of Fallout 4’s world as Howard claimed? It seems unlikely, though it’s worth keeping in mind that The Commonwealth of Fallout 4 did feature a lot of water. Around 20% if we had to guess. So there’s likely more explorable land in the new game.

Still, the world is plenty big enough for what promises to be an interesting multiplayer experience in Fallout 76. From what we’ve played of the beta so far, it’s very compelling –much more so than we initially thought it would be. You can check out our impressions here.

That’s all you need to know about how big the map is in Fallout 76 & how long it takes to walk across. For more useful guides and information on the game, be sure to check out our Fallout 76 wiki page.
