How to Beat the Auroral Serpent in Dragon Quest XI

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a massive JRPG with a detailed world to explore, as you might expect from the legendary franchise. While the game is a great starting point for newcomers to the genre, the difficulty ramps up slowly as you make your way through. This means that later on in Dragon Quest XI you’ll definitely run into a few tricky battles that’ll test your tactical abilities. One such battle is the Auroral Serpent, a boss that pops up almost out of nowhere as you’re making your way back to Sniflheim the second time. It can be one of the more challenging fights in the second half of Dragon Quest XI, so we’ll help give you a few tips.

First off, for the fight you’ll want to bring the hero, Hendrik, Rab, and Sylvando. If they don’t have them already, make sure Sylvando has the Hustle Dance skill under the Showmanship section, and Rab has the Right as Rain skill under Enlightenment. They aren’t super expensive, luckily. Also, make sure either the hero or Hendrik has the Dragon Slash ability and is using a shield and sword, or dual wielding swords. If you have any equipment that stops the paralyze status, equip it on Sylvando.

Rab is going to function as your main healer for this battle, and you’ll want to use his Right as Rain ability at all times so that each party members recovers a bit of HP on each turn. When Rab isn’t healing, you’ll want to have him use Sap on the boss, lowering it’s defense for the others to hit. Sylvando is going to act as your backup healer with Hustle Dance, and he should also use Oomphle to bump up your main attacker, whoever has Dragon Slash. Try and have Hendrik use Kabuff at the start of battle, and whenever else he can, to keep your party’s defense up. The Auroral Serpent has a nasty mix of physical and magical attacks, and he even has an ability that can paralyze your party members. If someone does happen to be paralyzed, you can use Sylvando’s Sobering Slap to get them out of it.

Have your main attacker use Dragon Slash over and over as it causes tons of damage to the dragon boss, and keep their attack up as best you can. The second character, Hendrik or the hero, should keep attacking as well, but switch to healing spells if you need to. Just slip attacks in when you can with the other characters and keep your stats up, and eventually, the Auroral Serpent will go down.

That’s all you need to know about how to beat the Auroral Serpent. For even more tips and guides on Dragon Quest XI, make sure to check out our wiki.
