How Weapons Work in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow
The weapon of your choice in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow dictates everything. It determines the pattern of your auto–attacks, range, and most importantly, your Coup de Grace, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow’s ultimate finishing move. You’ll need to charge it up before you unleash its awesome power.
Each weapon in the game has a Coup de Grace gauge cost. Weapons that have an overall lower gauge cost will allow you to spam Coup de Grace more frequently, significantly increasing the damage you deal.
Obtained weapons have different rarities, ranging from one (★1) to three stars (★3). Three-star weapons are significantly better than their one-star variants.
Another thing to note is that all of the acquired weapons can be equipped on all the characters you choose to bring with you. You control one of them, while the other two are AI-controlled. The weapons you give to the AI-controlled characters matter nearly as much as the one you equip on your main character, especially in terms of Adventure skills. AI-controlled characters can passively use the weapon’s Adventure Skill when you’re not controlling them.
Weapon Type Breakdowns
There are six different weapon types in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow:
- Spears
- Mid-range weapons with parry potential. Decent choice for players who want something between sword and staff range.
- Staves
- The longest-ranged weapon type in the game. Safest choice overall, and can be excellent on AI characters.
- Swords
- Swords have the shortest auto-attack range. However, they have the highest Coup de Grace potential in the game.
- Claws
- Short-range weapons with high burst potential. To use them effectively, you’ll need to dodge incoming enemy attacks.
- Whips
- Overall the best mob-clearing weapons in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow. They offer a large-area sweep and perform best in high-density encounters.
- Boomerangs
- Boomerangs dominate the current weapon meta. Their attack patterns allows for high-damage, long-range, and multi-directional mob clears.
Dragon Quest Smash/Grow Weapons Tier List

We’ve decided to focus on four things while crafting the tier list pictured above: the weapon’s auto-attack patterns and ranges, Adventure Skills, Coup de Grace damage, and overall gauge efficiency. In addition, we accounted for how they hold up across different types of content.
S+ Tier Weapons
| Weapon | Ranking Explanation |
|---|---|
![]() [Metal Wing ★3] | • Metal Wing is objectively the best weapon in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow at the moment. Its normal attack fires three times simultaneously in different directions, allowing you to deal damage from all angles. • Its Coup de Grace, Metal Throw, is a lot cheaper to use than the other available weapons. You’ll be triggering it way more frequently over the course of a run, which means more burst windows and higher overall damage in extended combat. • The only downside: Metal Wing is currently locked to the Metal Series limited banner, which ends on the 12th of May, 2026. If you want to obtain it, you’ll need to do so now, as it won’t be available later on. • Metal Wing gains a +20 damage increase to Metal-type enemies, including the Metal Slimes which are the primary source of EXP in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow. |
![]() [Metal Slime Sword ★3] | • Although Metal Wing outperforms Metal Slime Sword in range and area control, Metal Slime Sword’s overall effectiveness against any enemy type makes it a perfect choice for any stage. • Metal Slime Sword’s Coup de Grace is fairly cheap as well, matching Metal Wing’s overall rotation efficiency, as well as having an extremely powerful Adventure Skill. • The Finish Piora Adventure Skill grants an increased attack speed buff at the end of your combos, keeping your overall damage dealt consistent throughout the fight. However, Metal Slime Sword is also locked to the Metal Series limited banner, so you’ll want to get both of these weapons before the time runs out. • Metal Slime Sword, like Metal Wing, gains a +20 damage increase to Metal-type enemies, including the Metal Slimes. |
S Tier Weapons
| Weapon | Ranking Explanation |
|---|---|
![]() [Flame Sword ★3] | • Flame Sword has the highest overall DPS in the game. It shines best in mob-heavy runs, which describes the majority of Dragon Quest Smash/Grow content. Flame Sword’s unique mechanic, the homing Rengoku Fireballs, spawn each time you defeat an enemy. These fireballs automatically pursue enemies, and each enemy they kill spawns even more balls. • The explosions also mean that Flame Sword benefits from Blessings more than other weapons, as Blessings frequently scale with the number of hits. Its Coup de Grace, Purgatory Slash, is long-range attack which can hit multiple enemies in a line. • Flame Sword shines best when equipped on an AI character, as the Rengoku Fireballs Adventure Skill can be activated regardless of which character it’s equipped on. |
![]() [Ice Staff★3] | • Ice Staff is the weapon with the longest range in the game. It allows you to eliminate enemies from a distance where they physically can not hit you back. • Its Coup de Grace applies Freeze in a wide-area in front of your character, completely immobilizing enemies, leaving them clumped together and not able to attack or move. • The Adventure Skill deploys a counterattack aura around a character, absorbing every hit they receive and basically serves as a free damage output. Especially useful on AI controlled characters. |
![]() [Queen’s Whip ★3] | • Queen’s Whip performs its auto-attack pattern in a wide arc, allowing for decent mob clears in dense packs. • The Coup de Grace deploys a large field which increases your attack speed during its duration. • Combining the weapon’s near-360 degree attack pattern with its Coup de Grace creates a window where you’re hitting everything around you. • Another unique feature is the Queen’s Whip’s Adventure Skill. Whenever a sword-skill triggers, the Queen’s Whip will perform a follow up attack. The sword-skill can come from any equipped sword or Blessing. |
A Tier Weapons
| Weapon | Ranking Explanation |
|---|---|
![]() [Sandstorm Spear ★3] | • Sandstorm Spear is overall the best early-game Spear you should go for. • Its Passive has a chance to parry incoming attacks, and is especially effective against beasts due to its inherent Beast-type damage bonus. • Overall, although it’s a decent weapon (especially for mid-range combat), it can not compete with the weapons higher on the tier list. |
![]() [Falcon Blade ★3] | • Falcon Blade is possibly the overall most powerful, single-target Boss-killing weapon. • Its Coup de Grace, Hayabusa Slash, has the highest single-hit damage potential in the game. However, it has a rather narrow hitbox, which makes it difficult to use in AoE situations. Once activated, your character receives full immunity to slows, and a temporary increase to movement speed. • The Hayabusa Ball Adventure Skill lets out fast-moving projectiles through Blessings, which adds a ranged element in the otherwise melee-heavy setup. |
B Tier Weapon
| Weapon | Ranking Explanation |
|---|---|
![]() [Platinum Wing ★3] | • Platinum Wing is a decent overall free-to-play weapon. • Although it has the same auto-attack pattern as Metal Wing, it lacks a lot of its bonuses, • Platinum Wing doesn’t have any damage bonuses, nor the 5-gauge Coup de Grace. |
![]() [Crystal Claw ★3] | • Crystal Claw has the ability to hit twice during combo swings, making it one of the highest hit-count weapons in the game. • However, the weapon suffers from poor range. To consistently deal damage, you’ll need to stay in close-quarters, which comes with a high damage risk.. • Overall, Crystal Claw rewards players who prefer an aggressive playstyle, and can dodge attacks consistently. |
Dragon Quest Smash/Grow Weapon Reroll Guide
