How to Change Your PSN ID & PS4 Username

Recommended Videos

For a while now, PlayStation owners have been left behind. Steam and Xbox users have been able to freely change their online usernames whenever they see fit, as long as they had the cash (in the case of Xbox Live), but PSN users never could. Finally, the option to do so has finally arrived, and you’ll likely have plenty of questions about it. Here’s everything you need to know about changing your PSN ID.

First things first, it’s important to note that changing your PSN ID can only be done on a PS4 or a web browser. We’ve broken down the process for both of these methods down below, but just be aware that this feature isn’t something you’re able to do on a PS3 or PS Vita.

PS4

  • Head to the Settings option from your home screen.
  • Enter the Account Management menu and then select Account Information.
  • Choose Profile, and then the Online ID option within this menu.
  • Enter whatever you’d like to change your PSN ID to, but remember to ensure it meets Sony’s terms and conditions. A tick will appear by the name if it’s available for you to use.
  • Click Confirm and you’ll then be given the option to change how friends see and identify you on PSN. You can choose to show just your new online ID, or to show your new ID with the old one in parenthesis at the end. Choose whichever you wish.
  • You’ll then be signed out of PSN. Sign back in with your email address and password as usual, and you should now have successfully changed your PSN ID.

You can check the process out on PS4 down below.

Web Browser

  • Head on over to the PlayStation Network account page and sign in with your account.
  • Choose the PSN Profile option within the menu.
  • Select the Edit button that’s next to your Online ID.
  • Enter whatever you’d like your new PSN ID to be. Again, remember it conforms to PlayStation’s Terms of Service and so forth.
  • Click Confirm and you’ll then be given the option to change how friends see and identify you on PSN. You can choose to show just your new online ID, or to show your new ID with the old one in parenthesis at the end. Choose whichever you wish.

It’s worth noting at this point that your first change of ID will be completely free of charge, whether you’re a PS Plus subscriber or not.

However, any future changes you make to your PSN ID will then cost $9.99 for non-PS Plus subscribers, and $4.99 for those who are signed up to Sony’s online service.

Can You Change Back?

According to the official PlayStation Blog FAQ on this new feature, “You can (change your ID back) as long as the old ID doesn’t violate the Terms of Service.” What’s interesting, however, is that you won’t seemingly be able to do this through the methods outlined above.

If you want to change back to your old ID, you’ll need to contact PlayStation Support.

The good news, however, is that the FAQ also states that reverting back to your old ID is free. Though, this might be due to the potential issues players may face when changing their PSN username. We’ve outlined these down below.

Potential Issues With Changing Your PSN Username

The first and most important thing to be aware of when changing your PSN ID is that you may run into some compatibility issues and lost progress in some games.

Specifically, all PS3 and PS Vita games do not support the feature, and only games that were released after April 1, 2018 will support the feature (aside from one random exception we’ve listed below), though Sony notes they may not “fully support” it, whatever that means.

The entire list of games that have been tested and have known issues can be found here.

For your convenience, we’ve included all of the games with known issues with ID changes down below:

  • Absolver: Downfall
  • Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag
  • Big City Stories
  • Bloodborne
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts
  • Crossout
  • Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

  • Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite
  • MLB The Show 17
  • Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja STORM 4
  • Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja STORM Trilogy
  • Naruto STORM 4: Road to Boruto Expansion
  • NBA 2K19
  • PlayStation VR Worlds
  • Rock Band 4
  • Rocksmith 2014 Edition – Remastered
  • The Last of Us Remastered
  • Titanfall 2
  • Trackmania Turbo
  • Trove
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
  • UNO
  • Warframe
  • WipEout Omega Collection

The problems players may run into in these games include losing access to paid content like Season Passes or virtual currency. Losing saved data, leaderboard data, and trophy progress, as well as general online or offline functionality of games simply not working.

You can check out the full list down below.

  • You may lose access to content (including paid-for content) that you’ve acquired for those games, including content like add-ons and virtual currency.
  • You may lose your progress within those games, including game saved data, leaderboard data, and progress toward trophies.
  • Parts of those games might not function properly, both online and offline.
  • Your previous online ID(s) may remain visible to you and other players in some places.
  • You may have permanent game issues as a result of the online ID change that cannot be fixed with a revert back to your old online ID.
