Play Through the Story
Playing through Battleborn’s story provides a few benefits. The first is that it gives you a feel for the game. Different locations, different enemy types, and challenging bosses force you to adapt and become a better player. The story throws a bit of everything at you to keep you on your toes.
Other than the benefits of learning the ropes, the story also gives you plenty of opportunities to level up your Commander Rank and a few characters which lead to the unlocking of other characters which may be more to your liking. On top of new characters, you will obtain a lot of credits and some decent gear. By the time you finally do enter any of the Versus modes, you should be well situated and prepared for anything that may be thrown at you.Â
Play Practice Games Against the AI
First, the obvious reason for why you should play against the AI:Â It gives you a chance to see what it’s like to go up against other Battleborn heroes. While the story is full of various enemy types, they lack the special skills that only another hero can bring to a fight. You can adjust the difficulty to feel the brunt of their powers so that you can build strategies against certain types during specific modes.
Playing private games against the AI does not contribute to trophies/achievements or your Commander Rank, but you can level up heroes this way. Leveling up heroes unlocks skins as well as Helix Mutations which grant new, powerful options during Augmentation.Â
Spend Time Building Solid Loadouts
Loadouts are important as they are the best way to fine-tune your gameplay. Using Gear obtained through your time with Battleborn, you can set yourself up with three powerful items that can greatly improve your stats. Higher health, faster shields, and better aim are all possibilities. However, you need to figure out what it is you need most first.
Every time you unlock some new gear, check it out to see if it fits the way you play. Don’t become complacent, because you’ll always find new things that may help to give you a true edge. When you’ve built a great loadout, plan how you use your gear. If you only have 1,000 shards, what are you going to activate first? Go into each battle with a plan, and use your loadouts to ensure that plan.Â
Sell Useless Gear
While you may find a lot of useful gear, you’ll also find more than enough trash. However, the trash you find isn’t completely useless. You may not want to equip it in battle, but you can use it to fund your next piece of worthwhile gear.
Every piece of gear you find has a Sell Value. Head to the gear tab in the Command menu and you’ll be able to sell every single piece you have no need for. In that same tab you can purchase new Packs with the Credits you just earned. Use that trash to fund your future treasure.Â
Try Out Different Battleborn
There are currently 25 Battleborn available to be unlocked and used in the game. Each one brings a unique set of talents to the table, and you may find that some have particular niches that fit your playing style. Getting a hang of multiple characters allows you to provide versatility to your teams. Someone needs a tank to fill a spot? You can do it. They need a sniper to take out turrets? With practice you can do that too.
Don’t pigeonhole yourself into one character or one type. Spread your proverbial wings and experience all that Battleborn has to offer.Â
Communicate
One of the biggest requirements in any team based FPS or MOBA is communication. The matches are made up of moving parts, with minions shifting, objectives moving, and enemies trying to get the drop on you and your teammates. One of the strongest weapons against the constantly changing nature of the match is simply talking.
Calling out threats, letting your team know when you’re switching lanes or keeping everyone aware of your sentries’ status are all important things for teammates to be aware of. Often times, you’ll find that communication can turn a bad match into a victory, just because some last minute strategy within the team helped to turn the tide of battle.
At the very least, if you aren’t going to speak up yourself, make an effort to listen to those that do. Help when help is needed, play the objectives and target what’s called out. Either which way, you’ll prove to be a valuable member of any team.Â
Things Are Tougher When You’re Alone
Although Battleborn supports solo play, it was definitely built with multiple players in mind. Playing alone, you may be able to quickly dispatch the simpler enemies, but bosses will prove to be a sizable challenge. Do not let this discourage you, though.
After getting killed, you may think you just aren’t any good. But note that when playing alone your decisions will carry more weight. You may like melee characters like Rath, but you might find yourself facing a boss who requires ranged abilities to be brought down quickly. The fight won’t be impossible, but it will be all the more difficult because you’re there alone with your swords.
If you can make it happen, playing with others makes Battleborn a much more forgiving experience especially, and even more enjoyable.
