Nora (Final Fantasy XIII)
Kicking off our list is none other than Nora, one of the most minor side characters who ends up propelling most of the story forward in the first 10 hours of Final Fantasy XIII.
After the proverbial shit hits the fan in Cocoon, Snow and his group of rebels look to the civilians and ask if anyone wants to step up to push back PSICOM. Nora, the mother of a young boy, then decides that this would be a great time to put herself in danger and leave her son alone with strangers.
Look, I get it. She thinks she’s keeping him safe, but couldn’t she have kept him safe by sticking with him? Nora’s death then leads to Hope aspiring to become a murderer, and Lightning even gives him the murder weapon to enable him to do so. Nice.
Sora’s Mom (Kingdom Hearts)
Sora’s mom is probably one of the worst mothers in video games by virtue of being completely non-existent in the entire series.
The only hint of her existence that we get is in the original Kingdom Hearts, when the storm hits the island and she’s heard shouting, “Time for dinner!” When Sora doesn’t respond, she calls to him again. And then… nothing.
We never hear from her again and Sora doesn’t seem to care much about her either. I mean, when your son gets chosen by the Keyblade and decides to start saving multiple worlds, you’ve gotta have some sort of input on that, right?
Annette Birkin (Resident Evil 2)
Who lets their young daughter run about on their own in the middle of a zombie outbreak in the city? Annette Birkin, that’s who.
While her appearance in the Resident Evil 2 remake does soften her a little more, she’s still kind of a dick if we’re being totally honest. When Sherry speaks to her over the intercom, Annette berates her daughter for not staying at home and calling the police.
Calling the police? Yeah great advice, Annette. Jeez. She does redeem herself a little at the end of the game when she brings the antivirus to Sherry, but it was too little, too late.
Isaac’s Mom (The Binding of Isaac)
If we’re talking about worst mothers in video games, Isaac’s mom is definitely up there.
The premise of The Binding of Isaac starts with mom over here, who is a very devout follower of God. Her beliefs eventually warp her, though, and she’s convinced that she needs to kill her own son in order to prove just how much she loves God.
This kicks off the whole game of Isaac running into the basement, while being chased by gross, monstrous depictions of his mother. That’s pretty messed up.
Queen Brahne (Final Fantasy IX)
Queen Brahne is just not a very pleasant person to be around, she’s an even worse mother to Princess Garnet.
Brahne’s entire character arc revolves her wanting to seize all of the eidolons for herself, even if it ends up killing Garnet. To achieve that end, she even sends her entire army of magical knights after Garnet and the entire party, with little regard for anything other than her own interests.
Ma Cipriani (GTA: Liberty City Stories)
Speaking of moms who try to kill their kids, Ma Cipriani is probably one of the most annoying ones who’s guilty of that as well.
Throughout the entirety of Liberty City Stories, Ma continuously berates Toni for not being manly enough, or good enough to become a made man in the mafia. In fact, things get so bad to the point where she even puts out a hit on him in the second half of the game.
It’s only when Toni becomes made that she calls off the hit because he’s finally good enough in her eyes. Gee, thanks Ma.
Dahlia Gillespie (Silent Hill)
Yet another awful mom who completely abuses her daughter, Dahlia Gillespie is the leader of a religious cult in the town of Silent Hill.
Dahlia would physically abuse her daughter Alessa in attempts to convert her to the religion, and even burned the girl and kept her just barely alive for many years to prove her devotion to the god she worships.
We don’t doubt that Dahlia believed she was showing her love for Alessa in her own way, but as any sane person would tell you, she cray.
