Forza Horizon 4
When it comes to racing games, there’s not a whole lot of worthy competition for the Forza series. Whether you’re looking for Motorsport’s simulation racing, or Horizon’s open world arcade-style handling, both offer an unparalleled level of detail and excellent car handling. And that’s ultimately the most important part, right?
When it comes to Forza Horizon 4, developer Playground Games opted to bring the Horizon festival to the United Kingdom. This isn’t a complete recreation of the real-world country, but instead takes some of its best bits. For example, you’ll spend most of your time speeding around lush scenic views in the Lake District, before nipping up to the beautiful city of Edinburgh to the north.
Forza Horizon 4 pushes the series closer towards its shared world ambition, with racers all inhabiting the same dynamic world at all times. You can still enjoy everything on your own if you wish, but you’ll essentially always have the option to play with other Forza fans.
With a seemingly never-ending list of events and side activities to do, an extensive roster of cars, and post-launch content constantly giving you something to work towards, Forza Horizon 4 is the definitive racing game of 2018 without a doubt.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
After 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins, it’s safe to say that the series would never quite be the same again. After a much-needed year off its annual release cycle, Assassin’s Creed came back last year with a fresh RPG-like feel. Players could now level up their character, earn loot, upgrade gear, embark on countless quests, and learn abilities. A fresh lick of paint and a freshening up of the combat and traversal systems led to Assassin’s Creed Origins being a welcome turning point for the series.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is very much in the same vein as Origins, but instead takes players all the way back to Ancient Greece. Embroiled in the Peloponnesian War between the Athenians and Spartans, players will complete war contracts, fight off against all manner of mythical creatures, and even set sail on the seas.
If Assassin’s Creed Origins reignited your interest in Ubisoft’s long-running series, you’ll more than likely find a heck of a lot to enjoy in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. It’s a pretty huge game, after all.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
Call of Duty has always provided a single-player campaign for players to sink their teeth into. It may not have had quite as much of a buzz around it as the multiplayer modes, but it was still loved all the same. Roll up Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, then. The first Call of Duty title to cut the single-player mode in favor of a trio of multiplayer offerings. Fortunately, thanks to how diverse these are in nature, there should be at least something that resonates with all fans of the series.
For those who still can’t get enough of the classic Call of Duty multiplayer action, you’ll find a mode reworked for that Black Ops 4 feel. That includes forcing you to manually heal up, a number of new scorestreaks, and some new maps, too.
Then you’ve got the Zombies mode. Black Ops 4 introduces a fresh set of characters, and sends them on an epic adventure back in time to find Scarlett’s father (she’s one of the new characters, by the way). Of course, this is zombies mode, so all of your jaunts into the past will be teeming with the bloodthirsty undead. Currently, we know we’ll be fighting off zombies in an ancient coliseum, and on the Titanic back in 1912, too. Exactly where else Treyarch will take us further down the line remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a promising start.
And finally, because it’s 2018 and of course it does, Black Ops 4 has a battle royale mode in the form of Blackout. For those wanting the military battle royale experience with the fast-paced action that Call of Duty is so famous for, this could finally be the iteration on the genre you’ve been waiting for. Complete with little Easter egg references to past games in the series, vehicles, and the Zombies mode’s Mystery Box, Blackout looks like some solid competition to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

SoulCalibur VI
It’s been too damn long since we got a SoulCalibur game, but it seems as though Bandai Namco agreed. SoulCalibur VI is set to hit the Xbox One on Oct. 19, bringing back fan-favorite characters like Siegfried and Nightmare for another bout of weapon-based battles. That’s not all, though, with The Witcher series’ Geralt of Rivia being the headline guest appearance to the roster in this entry.
That’s not all that’s new, though. SoulCalibur VI will, of course, look considerably better than its most recent predecessor — which was back in 2012 — but will also introduce a new mechanic. Reversal Edge will enable players to defend themselves from an incoming attack, before quickly countering with their own attack. The whole thing plays out in an aptly-satisfying slow-mo effect, too. What’s not to like?

Red Dead Redemption 2
Did you really think we’d write up a list of the best Xbox One games to have on your radar in October 2018 and not include Red Dead Redemption 2? Rockstar Games’ upcoming title is arguably the most anticipated title of the year. Acting as a prequel to the story of its predecessor, the game takes place in the aftermath of a Van der Linde gang heist gone wrong. You’re Arthur Morgan, a member of the gang who must now work with his fellow members to avoid the law enforcement and bounty hunters now after them. We’ve seen gameplay trailers of trains being blown up, some sort of bank heist, and a whole lot more. Basically, be prepared for a whole lot of action and explosive set-pieces.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is shaping up to be far more detailed and comprehensive than any other open world title to come before it. You’ll need to manage the amount of food you eat, what kind of food you eat, whether you shave, bathe, change your clothes, what you call your horse. You get the idea. Pretty much anything you have to think about in real life, you have to think about in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Wrap all of that up in some of the prettiest visuals we’ve seen so far this generation, and add in the fact you’ll get access to the Red Dead Online beta kicking off in November for just picking up the title, and you’ve got hundreds of hours of content on a single disc. If Red Dead Redemption 2 wasn’t on your radar for October 2018 already, it absolutely should be now.
