Q4 2018: Best PS4 Co-op Games

Earth Defense Force 5

best PS4 co-op games, q4 2018

Let’s kick off this list with arguably one of the OGs of B-, silly, but fun co-op games, Earth Defense Force 5. As the title would suggest, you are an esteemed member of the force tasked with defending Earth. Perhaps a look into the future of the USA’s Space Force?

Anyway, Space Force, erm I mean the Earth Defense Force series, is all about fending off attacks from evil alien species whose only desire is to kill and enslave us, primarily in the form of giant bugs.

They attack in massive waves like the Zerg from StarCraft, and will not stop until you’ve put them all down.

You can play the game with a friend, and despite its silly premise and extremely loose story elements, it’s quite a fun shooter. You can customize your character’s loadouts with a lot of weapons, and choose a class that fits your particular play style.

If the series has evaded your grasp until now, and you and a friend just want to have stupid fun blowing the crap out of alien bugs and robots in the most varying ways possible, exit your comfort zone a bit, and give Earth Defense Force 5 a try.

Q4 2018: Best PS4 Co-op Games

Red Dead Redemption 2 (Red Dead Online)

Gun Rush

We go from alien bugs from outer space to the legendary Rockstar Games’ take on the Wild West. While most of the acclaim surrounding the game is from the excellent single-player campaign, you’d be remiss not to keep Red Dead Online on your radar too.

Red Dead Online right now is still in its beta, and Rockstar is still working out the balance and the overall gameplay loop at the moment.

But, past history has shown with Grand Theft Auto Online that if you give the multiplayer team some time, they will eventually land on a formula that is not only fun, but will also be supported for years to come.

As it currently stands, you and other online friends can play together in organized traditional game modes like Team Shootout or the game’s take on battle royale, Make it Count.

You can play with a friend in co-op free roam missions to earn gold, the currency needed to make your Red Dead Online characters actually look kind of good; or just enjoy the beautiful open-world with a buddy.

And of course, a nice side effect of picking up RDR2 for Red Dead Online, is that you have arguably the best single-player experience of this generation at your disposal. Pretty sweet deal.

Q4 2018: Best PS4 Co-op Games

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Black Ops 4

Finally, we arrive at Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. One of the most complete, varied, and well-polished multiplayer experiences from not only the long-running Call of Duty franchise, but just from FPS games in general this entire generation.

As far as co-op modes are concerned you have quite a few at your disposal. The most traditionally non-competitive co-op only game mode is Zombies. Anyone that has picked up a Call of Duty game, especially the Treyarch developed ones, should know what Zombies are at this point.

You and a friend (up to four total), must survive against waves of Zombies, as you work your way across a map. You’ll need to find better weapons, create traps and fortifications, and support each other over a long period of time and distance in order to survive.

There’s Blackout mode, Call of Duty’s popular new battle royale mode, which takes traditional gameplay from the genre, and merges it with Call of Duty style gunplay.

You can play with a friend in duos, or squads of up to four people online. Blackout has caught on quite well, and expect it to be a staple in the series for years to come.

Finally, you can always team up with a friend to do some old-school Call of Duty competitive FPS games. Domination, Kill Confirmed, etc. all the major game modes are still there.

That’s our choices for the best PS4 couch co-op games from Q4 2018. If you haven’t picked any of these up yet, definitely see which one fits best for you, grab a bud, and start playing.
