Thanks to an exclusive article on Wired, we now know tons of information about Sony’s next-gen console, now officially confirmed to be called the PS5. While we did get some juicy tidbits and details, there are still lots of unanswered questions that we still have about the upcoming console.
Price
We may be asking some big questions with this article here even though we’re most likely over a year out from the PS5’s release, but knowing the price point of the console is probably the biggest aspect of the next-gen hardware.
Sony has yet to release any info about the price of the PS5, but considering that the introductory price of the PS4 at launch was $399, we can expect the console to hit around that same price mark, probably costing a tad bit more.
We actually wrote up a feature all about predicting the price of the PS5 at launch, so you can check that out here if you’re interested.
Console Design
When it comes to PlayStation consoles, Sony tends to play it safe. The PlayStation 1 was a grey-colored box, the PS2 was a black rectangle, the PS3 was a black rectangle, and of course, the same goes for the PS4 and the PS4 Pro.
With that being said, we can expect the PS5 to be yet another familiar black box but it’s still exciting nonetheless.
Sony will most likely have some sort of console unveiling early next year to finally show us what the PS5 looks like so we can see what we’ll be taking home next holiday season.
Backward Compatibility; How Will it Work?
The last time that Wired spoke with Sony about the next PlayStation, they revealed that PS4 games will be backward compatible with the PS5, but they still haven’t talked about how that would work exactly.
Will the PS4 games we play on the PS5 look better? Will we be able to download PS4 games off of PSN to our new consoles?
These are the questions that we want to be answered soon so we can safely get rid of our PS4’s without having that fear of not being able to play our favorite titles.
Release Date
While we did get a release window for the PS5 in the Wired article (holiday 2020), we still do not know about the exact date that it’s coming.
If it follows the PS4, we can expect for the console to launch sometime in November of 2020 as most consoles end up releasing.
And if history repeats itself, the next Xbox should also release around the same time, giving Sony some competition at the start of the next-gen race.
PSVR
PSVR has been gaining traction lately due to some pretty decent releases like Blood and Truth and Trover Saves the Universe and Sony seems to be adamant on the support of the VR headset.
This brings the question: how will PSVR be implemented into the new console? We know that the old unit will be compatible with the PS5, but will there be an improved model that launches with the next-gen console? A wireless one perhaps?
PSVR users usually talk about how they really enjoy playing games using the headset but the setup process can be annoying due to the multiple cables and such.
Here’s hoping that a revamped model comes out that is tempting for those that have been wanting to jump into the VR landscape.
Storage Space
There’s no doubt that titles developed in next-gen in mind will be much larger in size compared to the current-gen. Instead of a game taking up 50 or 60 gigabytes, that number will most definitely increase as we make the move to the PS5.
This being said, what will the storage space be for the PS5? The PS4 Pro has a one terabyte hard drive and the original PS4 has 500 gigabytes of storage space so the PS5 should be larger than those two, hopefully.
Since I still own the OG PS4 unit, I constantly have to delete large games from my hard drive to make room for new titles that I have installed and it’s very frustrating at times.
Let’s hope Sony addresses this question sooner rather than later.
Crossplay
Recently, it was announced that PS4 cross-play has exited the beta stage meaning that developers now have full reign over whether or not they want to include cross-play functionality in their titles but will Sony keep this feature in for the PS5?
Sony hasn’t always played nice with other publishers like Nintendo and Microsoft when it comes to multiplayer, but we only hope that cross-play works flawlessly for the PS5 and that gamers can enjoy playing games together, regardless of their console of choice.
Sony has yet to discuss their cross-play plans for the future but let’s hope to hear more info on that soon.
