The PlayStation Store is celebrating the holiday spirit with a massive PSN Holiday sale that discounts tons of high-quality games, with even Death Stranding taking part for the first time. Round 1 of the holiday sale ends on Thursday, Jan. 5 but keep an eye out for round 2 next month which will feature even more savings. So you don’t have to waste your time looking through the digital store like a madman, here are the best PS4 games to buy during this sale.
Death Stranding
Original Price: $59.99
Sale Price: $40.19
Death Stranding is Hideo Kojima’s latest action game and it’s bonkers. It’s essentially a game where you play as a deliveryman named Sam Porter Bridges who is working to reconnect America by going from city to city while trying to avoid dangerous monsters known as BT’s and other scary foes.
It’s definitely a Kojima game from head to toe just because of the wacky and nonsensical story but you can’t deny just how polished the entire experience is. The voice work is excellent, the world that you explore is absolutely gorgeous to look at, and the soundtrack really puts you in the mood.
It’s a slow and tiring experience throughout but once you get into the meat and potatoes of it, you won’t be able to stop playing until you see the end.
Control
Control: $59.99
Sale Price: $38.99
A combination of the quirky setting of Twin Peaks mixed with the combat reminiscent of Remedy’s past game, Quantum Break, Control is a fascinating game that puts you in the shoes of Jesse Faden, a young woman who finds herself taking over as the director of the FBC.
She ends up with some supernatural powers that let her use force-like powers to deal with the Hiss, creepy enemies that will stop at nothing to get rid of Jesse.
It’s an amazing game that plays out sort of like a Metroidvania and the combat is excellent, giving players the option to play around with many elements of the environment to make fighting very improvisational.
Its price has been cut down to less than $40 during this PSN Holiday sale so make sure to get on that.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Original Price: $59.99
Sale Price: $29.99
In a world full of flashy and modern JRPG’s like Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3, and Nier: Automata, Dragon Quest XI is sort of a fresh of breath air as it gives players a very traditional role-playing game that sticks to its roots and doesn’t budge.
But even though the game is old-fashioned as hell, the combat is superb, the enemy design is classic yet entertaining, and the plot/characters are very well done.
Echoes of an Elusive Age will go down as one of the best JRPG’s of the decade and you should totally check it out for yourself if you’re even slightly interested. Also, don’t be afraid of the XI there on the title, this series is similar to Final Fantasy as each numbered entry is a standalone narrative.
Its price has been cut in half for the PSN Holiday sale so there’s no better time to start your quest.
Judgment
Original Price: $59.99
Sale Price: $29.99
Judgment is a spin-off of the cult Yakuza series but with more investigation-based gameplay. You still have the wacky combat that lets you throw bicycles and traffic cones at Japanese thugs but the story is broken down into cases ala Ace Attorney style.
It’s the perfect game to play for someone who’s never jumped into the Yakuza series before as it introduces the Kamurocho district of Japan and you can interact with the residents to take on quests and participate in silly mini-games and activities.
It’s really fun to solve these cases and the outrageous characters and situations are worth checking out, especially for this price during the PSN Holiday sale.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Original Price: $59.99
Sale Price: $49.79
It’s been some time since we’ve gotten an excellent single-player Star Wars story but Respawn and EA have delivered on the promise. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a fantastic title and takes inspiration from games like Tomb Raider and Metroid Prime to give people a big ol’ video game smoothie that isn’t the best tasting but is still highly enjoyable.
The original story is surprisingly well-written and the wonderful voice performances from the cast help make it even better. The lightsaber combat feels really good and the skill tree makes you feel like a real Jedi. Force-pushing a group of Stormtroopers off of a ledge is one of the most satisfying things from gaming this year.
