The life of a courier in Death Stranding is one filled with opportunities to get eaten by weird black shadowy things called BTs. If you do take damage on your adventures across this desolate world, you’ll probably want to know how to get Sam back and fully recovered. Here’s how to heal in Death Stranding and refill your blood.
Healing in Death Stranding
Sam’s health is shown by the red bar that appears next to him when you’re out and about, with the blue bar below being his stamina. This health bar is determined by his blood levels. Sam has 1000ml of blood, so when you need to heal up, you’ll need to find a way for him to top his blood back up.
There are two ways you can heal in Death Stranding. The first is to look out for Cryptobiotes. These are small bugs that will immediately replenish a large amount of Sam’s health. To find these, look out for the pale red-colored rocks, shown in the screenshot below.
These tend to have a good one or two Cryptobiotes crawling around them at the very least. Press and hold Square and you’ll eat one, topping up Sam’s blood levels and restoring his health.
The other way to heal in Death Stranding is to use blood bags. These restore 500ml of blood each and you can carry four in Sam’s inventory when exploring. You can craft these yourself, and you’ll also get one after every time you send Sam to sleep in a private room (not out in the open).
Can You Increase Max Health in Death Stranding?
Because Sam’s health is determined by his blood levels, you can’t actually increase your max health in Death Stranding. After all, it’d be a bit weird to continue pumping Sam with even more blood than his body can take.
