Code Vein, like most Souls-like games, has a pretty complex combat system with a lot of inner working parts. Something that can turn the tides of battle is the ability to launch an enemy, but it’s not entirely clear how to do so in the game. Here’s how to launch enemies in Code Vein.
How to Launch Enemies in Code Vein
While the bulk of your combos in Code Vein will be made up of light attacks and heavy attacks, you do have a couple of other options. By holding down R1 (RB) and then hitting another button you can launch other attacks.
R1 plus X (A) will let you use a draining attack during a combo, while R1 plus triangle (Y) will let you use a launch attack.
The launch attack differs depending on your weapon, and keep in mind that bigger heavier weapons will take longer to wind-up, but have further reach to compensate for it.
While you can use a launch attack at any time to damage enemies, it won’t actually launch enemies unless your focus gauge is full.
Building Focus
Focus is a resource that builds as your fighting in Code Vein, specifically whenever you land an attack, take damage, successfully dodge, or successfully parry.
The focus gauge is the small one above your HP and stamina gauges, and once full it’ll flash blue and start draining, denoting that you’ve entered Focus mode.
At this point, you can use R1+triangle to execute your launch attack and make the enemy fly up into the air. At this point, you can follow-up with a drain attack by pressing R1+X.
While we’re on the topic, be aware that enemies have their own Focus gauge, and they can be quite dangerous when it’s full, with unpredictable behavior. Just like your gauge, an enemy’s focus gauge will flash blue above their head when it’s full.
To summarize how to use a launch attack,
- First build your Focus Gauge by landing attacks, taking damage, dodging, or parrying.
The gauge will flash blue when it’s full
- Once full, press R1+triangle (RB+Y) in order to hit the enemy with a launch attack and send them into the air.
- Now you can follow up with a Drain Attack to do massive damage and gain Ichor.
That’s everything you need to know about how to launch enemies in Code Vein.
