Best Upcoming Games in April 2019

Days Gone

Days Gone

Probably the most exciting game PS4 owners have to look forward to this month, Days Gone is an action game set in a post-apocalyptic zombie-infested world.

Developed by Bend Studio, players will take control of protagonist Deacon as they explore an open world while getting around on a motorcycle that can be customized. The game features a day/night cycle as well, which will affect the way the zombies react to you and how aggressive they are.

Mortal Kombat 11

In terms of multi-platform releases, Mortal Kombat 11 is also releasing this month, which is incredibly exciting news for fighting game fans. Tons of fan-favorite characters are coming back, including Scorpion and Sub-Zero (of course), along with Johnny Cage and Baraka, who was killed in Mortal Kombat X.

While the popular X-Ray attacks seem to have been removed from MK11, NetherRealm Studios is adding a new Fatal Blow mechanic in the game to make up for any lost gore and brutality.

Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain

A bit of a niche release for this month, Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain will be releasing on April 11. Fans of the series already know what they’re getting into: giant ants and bugs have invaded our planet, and it’s up to you to drive them out of our homeland.

Mortal Kombat 11

We already touched on Mortal Kombat 11 earlier, so we won’t dive too deeply into this one. But essentially, Mortal Kombat 11 is shaping up to be a great fighter so far. And even if you’re not a fan of the genre, the Mortal Kombat games generally have pretty strong story campaigns that will keep you entertained from start to finish.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy

For the first time ever, Phoenix Wright will be coming to the Xbox One, which is exciting news for Xbox-only players who have never gotten the chance to check out the Ace Attorney series.

Players will take control of Phoenix Wright, a defense attorney who must prove the innocence of his clients at all costs. It’s worth noting that this is a visual novel series, so be prepared to point and click on things while reading tons of text. The good news is, the story and writing are excellent, and there are tons of twists to look forward to.

Switch

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster

It’s Final Fantasy season for the Nintendo Switch, as FFX and X-2 will be making their way to the console in April. Possibly the best entry in the series to get into for newcomers, Final Fantasy X features a great turn-based combat system that truly withstands the test of time.

Final Fantasy X-2 also has a wonderful combat system, but with how tonally different the story is in the sequel, your mileage may vary with this one.

Cuphead

Originally an Xbox One/PC exclusive, Cuphead is releasing on the Switch this month. It’s essentially a boss rush type of game, though there are optional levels you can tackle in between. Cuphead was praised for its beautiful old-timey graphical style, and the challenge that comes with taking down its colorful bosses.

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen

Still one of the best action-RPGs ever released on the PS3, it’s pretty exciting to see Capcom bring Dragon’s Dogma to Nintendo’s hybrid console.

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen features an in-depth class and pawn system that allows you to build your character (and sidekick) however you want, and choose unique skills that would fit your play style. The Switch port also comes packed with the Dark Arisen DLC, which comes with a challenging end game dungeon for players to tackle.

BoxBoy and BoxGirl

For the puzzle fans out there, BoxBoy and BoxGirl is the sequel to BoxBoy, and it features tons of new levels for you to tackle with a friend.

You can play the game solo as well, as you use BoxBoy to twist his body around to solve environmental puzzles and get through the levels.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

Alongside X and X-2, Final Fantasy XII will also be joining Square Enix’s library of FF games on the Switch this April. The Zodiac Age port was first released on PS4, but it looks like the Switch version will include a few extra improvements.

For instance, there will be an easier way for you to reset character jobs. In addition to that, there will also be a new game plus mode that allows you to carry over character levels, weapons, and money into a new adventure.
