The Suit Stitching

With Spidey being the main protagonist of… Spider-Man PS4, like that wasn’t obvious, Insomniac Games has clearly spent a whole lot of time ensuring that its character model of the iconic Manhattan hero was perfectly realized. Each and every suit that you have access to in Spider-Man PS4 has painstaking levels of detail. The Iron Spider suit glistens realistically in different light sources, while the comic strip suit can bring some lighthearted fun to the more realistic, sinister environment you’re exploring.

However, if you’re looking for some of the finest details in Spider-Man PS4, look no further than the ‘standard’ Spidey suits you’ll have access to from very early on. While it’s difficult to make out in the image above, it is possible on a TV to see all of the individual strands of materials and stitching that holds the entire thing together. Each seam and hexagonal piece of fabric can be made out if you look close enough, particularly in photo mode, which is definitely something you’ll want to check out for yourself.

Web Strands

It’s not just Spider-Man who’s had plenty of time spent ensuring that he looks his best. His trusty webs are arguably just as iconic and part of his superhero identity as his suit is. After all, what kind of Spider-Man doesn’t shoot webs? They’d just be… man!

Insomniac Games has poured plenty of detail into every strand of web that Spidey shoots from his wrists. Spidey can’t just swing around on an impossibly tiny strand of web as he soars between skyscrapers in Manhattan. He needs a web with plenty of tensile strength, and as you can see in the image above, that involves multiple strands being intertwined to support Spider-Man as he swings through the streets to save another innocent citizen.

Particularly around his hands, you’ll notice that the web gets even more tangled and seemingly bulkier than it does at the end attached to the building. The fact that we’re reaching a point in video games now where the strands of a web that make up Spider-Man’s web shots is just as detailed as the main protagonist is kinda crazy. But hey, we aren’t complaining.

Stunning Lighting

Arguably one of the biggest visual improvements that’s come over the current generation are the stunning lighting effects we’re now seeing in games. While Uncharted 4 used this to add immersion to its unexplored caves or tombs, with dust catching slits of light coming through cracks in a dilapidated ceiling, Spider-Man opts to create a Manhattan that looks stunning regardless of the weather or the time of day.

When the sun sets in the sky over Central Park, the environment is bathed in a lush, pale orange glow. Water glistens softly, with a faint reflection cast upon its surface. At night, all of the lights create a subtle glow throughout the city, nailing the ‘city that never sleeps’ feel that Manhattan is so well-known for.

Even spotlights in enemy bases realistically light the ground directly below up, before gently tinting the dark night skies with a white glow. And the eyes of NPCs in cutscenes glisten as they catch the light, making the action all the more immersive and realistic.

There are a ton of instances of Spider-Man PS4’s fantastic lighting if you spend the time to look for them, and they only help to add a bit more life and character to the fantastic rendition of Manhattan that Insomniac Games has created here.

Fancy Window Reflections

We’re pretty sure this is one of the easiest, tiny details you can miss in Spider-Man PS4. Why? Well, you spend so much time speeding through the streets of Manhattan, passing by these very windows as you nonchalantly glide through the air on your way to put an end to a vehicle chase or to bust a drug deal, that you rarely take a moment to look around you.

Swinging from building to building, particularly at speed, requires a lot of concentration. Plus, Spidey builds up some serious speed if you get your swings right, so it’s fair to see you’re unlikely to sit and stare at the windows of buildings you can’t gain access to.

But if you do, you’ll notice some pretty awesome reflections in the windows. They provide an incredible mirror image of whatever’s opposite the building, with the aforementioned excellent lighting effects playing a large part into how much you can see in the reflection, or whether there’s much of a reflection at all.

It doesn’t add anything to the gameplay, and as it’s so easily missed, you likely won’t acknowledge just how great the window reflections are. But, it’s safe to say that, when combined with the rest of the bustling recreation of Manhattan that Insomniac Games has created, it crafts an environment that’s just as immersive as it is entertaining to explore.
