The Obligatory Cameo
There has always been one common thread in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that is that Marvel Comics creator and pop culture icon Stan Lee has a cameo. Every one of the 20 films has Stan Lee in them at some point as a cute little nod to fans. But does he break into the gaming universe? It turns out that he does!
Stan Lee appears early on in the first act of Spider-Man on PS4. Without going into spoilers, Lee actually plays a part in progressing the story, which sets this appearance apart from his cinema cameos.
Lee was actually the co-creator of Spider-Man, along with the recently departed Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby. Spidey’s first appearance was in Amazing Fantasies #15 in August of 1962. The surprising success issue garnered a full series for the wall-crawler and the first issue of The Amazing Spider-Man was published in March 1963.

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility
Through their journey in Insomniac’s Big Apple, players can stop and take a solemn and respectful moment in one of the graveyards. Buried in this graveyard is Ben Parker, Peter Parker’s uncle and pseudo-father. His death at the hands of a thief who Peter could have stopped is one of the most formative moments of Peter’s life and helps set him on the righteous path. Visiting his tombstone will pop the With Great Power trophy for players.
Uncle Ben is the character who is quoted for coming up with the iconic Spider-Man mantra ‘with great power comes great responsibility.’ Those words have always been a guiding principle for Peter when he grapples with how to balance his civilian life with his superhero responsibilities. The quote has been attributed to philosophers and world leaders like Voltaire and Theodore Roosevelt, but the quote appears in Spider-Man’s original 1962 appearance and from there became relevant to pop culture.

Avengers Assemble
As previously noted in pre-release trailers and information from previewers, Avengers Tower makes an appearance. Players will find the skyscraper and actually be able to scale the massive structure. Reaching the top will reward players with another trophy and give them an awesome opportunity to dive off it.
The high-rise building is also known as Stark Towers, named for Tony Stark, who is known as Iron Man. We have yet to run into Iron Man, or any other Avenger, for that matter. Another location that harkens to a larger Marvel Universe is the Sanctum Santorum, the home and base of operations for Dr. Stephen Strange, Sorcerer Supreme.
The Wakandan Embassy, which represents the country that the Black Panther hails from, is also a landmark Spider-Man can swing to. If the player takes a picture at the Wakanda Embassy, Spider-Man will quip in classic fashion about the origin of Black Panther’s powers, remarking “I wonder if T’Challa got his powers by being bitten by a radioactive panther…”

Collectibles
The collectibles in the game all make reference to Spider-Man lore. Every collectible backpack that is littered about the world contain not only experience points, but little nods to Spider-Man/Peter’s history. We won’t expound on every easter egg in the game, but for example, one backpack contained a broken eye lens from an old pair of glasses, which is reminiscent of the scene from the first Toby Maguire Spider-Man movie where he discovers that thanks to his new found powers, he no longer needs the corrective lenses.
The different suits that can be equipped all take homage from the comics or movies. The Iron Spider suit is referential to the suit Tom Holland dawned in this years’ Avengers: Infinity War. A number of suits, like the Spider-Punk outfit, are callbacks to the Spider-verse crossover comic.
