As you gain more perk points in Far Cry 5, you’ll be able to unlock useful perks and abilities from the skill tree. However, you might have already noticed that some perks can’t be unlocked unless you defeat a Lieutenant. The game never really makes it clear exactly what Lieutenants are, but don’t worry, we can help to clear this up quickly.

To put it simply, Lieutenants are the bosses of the game. Namely, John, Jacob, and Faith Seed. These three antagonists need to be defeated before you can trigger a confrontation with the Father himself, Joseph. If you just play the game normally and progress through the main missions while collecting Resistance Points, you will inevitably get into a showdown with all three Lieutenants. Simply beating them will unlock specific perks in the skill tree.

We definitely recommend taking out your first Lieutenant as soon as you possibly can in Far Cry 5. One of the more useful perks in the game allows you to unlock the fourth weapon holster, which lets you carry a fourth weapon of any type. Once you defeat a boss, and if you have enough perk points, you can unlock this right after clearing the first region.
