Beating the Octo Samurai Boss in Splatoon 2

Recommended Videos

The Octo Samurai is the second boss you’ll come across in Splatoon 2, and he wields a large Roller while riding around on a unicycle. The first phase is relatively simple, as he yells each time before he swings his weapon. The most important thing here is to make sure you always have a safe area that you can swim to. I found that using the Roller to ink a long strip of ground provided a lot of cover to work with. The best way to deal damage for this phase (and the entire fight) is to jump and hit the ZR button to perform an air strike.

Every now and then, the Octo Samurai will ride the Roller and zoom across the map quickly. At this point, just swim back and forth to avoid him. He can’t be hurt in this form, so just wait for him to get off the Roller before you continue your assault.

The second and third phases are largely the same, except he gains a couple of new trips. First, he’ll be able to perform a long range attack where he splashes a large strip of ink towards you. This is easily avoided if you continue to ink the ground and swim back and forth to avoid his strikes. He can also perform a sweeping strike all around him. There’s a pretty long wind-up animation for this attack, so be sure to move out of the way when you see him raising the Roller to his side.

Each time you stun him, you’ll be able to attack the squid tentacle, which moves the fight to the next phase. Repeat your tactics until he’s finally down.
