Minecraft: Where to Find Diamond

This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information

Diamond is one of the most lucrative materials in the Minecraft world, but it’s incredibly difficult to find. Here are the best places to find it.

First off, you’ll need to know where to mine. Diamond can be found on any layer between one and 16, however, it’s mostly found on and around layer 12. To check what layer you’re on, you can check the Y value on your map. With this in mind, you’ll want to dig your way down (make sure you have plenty of pickaxes) and just get exploring.

If you’ve seen an opening to a cave on your adventures, head in and follow it as far as you can. Caves are a pretty reliable source of diamonds. However, the rare gem is sometimes hidden away behind a river of lava or a couple of layers of stone around you. Therefore, if you have the crafting ingredients to do so, make a bucket. Take it with you so you can put out pesky lava flows that are in the way of you reaching those shiny jewels.

While these layers are often the best places to look for diamonds, it’s not a surefire way of getting them. Each Minecraft world is randomly generated and so there is never a way to guarantee where they will spawn. Don’t forget though, diamonds can also be found above ground in chests so always make sure to open and loot chests whenever you see them.
