Diablo Immortal is all about slaying swarms of demons as you grind out ever-increasingly powerful loot to kit out your character with… so you can kill more demons, and get even better loot. It’s a rather compelling gameplay cycle, but before you can get into all that goodness, you’ll be faced with a choice. You’ll need to pick one of Diablo Immortal’s six character classes, and you’ll want to take the time to make the right decision, as they play a large part in how you’ll fight back against the forces of hell.
All Classes in Diablo Immortal
There are six classes to choose from when you first start your adventure — Barbarian, Wizard, Demon Hunter, Monk, Crusader and Necromancer. These will determine how your character will play in the game, the kinds of attacks they’ll have at their disposal, and the nature of their skills.
Barbarian – Diablo Immortal Guide
The Barbarian class is the one you want to go for if you like to get up-close-and-personal with your enemies, as it favors melee and physical damage types. It’s not technically called the tank in-game, but it basically is Diablo Immortal’s equivalent tank class, and has the following in-game description:
“Savage warriors who protect their sacred ancestral lands with brutal melee attacks, unleashing their undying rage on the demonic horde.”
The Barbarian specializes in dealing out area-of-effect damage. It makes them great for when you’re part of a party taking on the forces of hell, but can make taking on the adventure solo a little trickier, as targeting solo enemies is a little harder with their various skills.
Wizard – Diablo Immortal Guide
The Wizard class is the one you’ll want to choose if you fancy dealing out the damage with some spicy spellcasting. It also specializes in area-of-effect damage but will deal it from afar, rather than getting right into the heart of a fight.
It has the following in-game description: “Renegade spellcasters who channel arcane energy into powerful combinations of magic that manipulate and destroy their foes.”
Wizards also have a wealth of incredibly powerful skills which can be chained together as combos, but that does mean you’re going to have to manage multiple cooldowns to ensure you’re not left with just your basic attack when a particularly strong enemy rocks up into battle.
Demon Hunter – Diablo Immortal Guide
The Demon Hunter is the glass cannon class of Diablo Immortal, capable of dealing out huge amounts of damage with its arsenal of arrows, explosives and other powerful skills, but won’t last long if it starts taking hits from enemies. It’s a ranged, physical damage dealer.
The description reads: “Relentless vigilantes who wreak vengeance on the demonic horde with an arsenal of arrows, explosives, and mechanics, while moving constantly out of reach of their foes.”
That last bit is stated for a reason, and if you’re going to try and play through Diablo Immortal solo, you’ll need to make sure you’re confident of staying mobile and out of the way of danger while dishing out the damage. Otherwise, you might be in for a rough ride.
Monk – Diablo Immortal Guide
The Monk class is a melee, physical damage dealer, but it also has a ton of support-based skills that make it a fairly solid all-rounder. As long as you don’t mind chipping away at enemies if you’re playing solo, it’s got enough wiggle room in its skills to tailor it to your own playstyle. However, we’d arguably say it’s a far better option for players who want to play through Diablo Immortal with friends, as you can make a pretty strong support build on this class.
“Sacred martial artists who channel divine energy into powerful melee attacks, rapid movement on the battlefield, and wards that protect themselves and their allies,” its description reads. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend this one for newcomers, as there’s a lot to get your head around to use it effectively, but it’s a fun class for seasoned Diablo fans, or those who relish a challenge.
Crusader – Diablo Immortal Guide
The Crusader is a melee damage dealer, but it has a mix of physical and magical attacks that make taking out groups of demons in one swift attack incredibly easy — and satisfying!
“Unbending champions of faith who rely on holy magic and heavy armor to withstand attacks, while vanquishing demonic foes with blazing fire and blinding light,” its description reads. This highlights its tanky health bar, but it should be noted that, unlike the Barbarian class, the Crusader doesn’t have a particularly effective basic attack.
If you’re not clever about how and when you use your various abilities, you’re going to be a bit of a sitting duck. A rather damage spongey sitting duck, but a pretty ineffective one at dealing out damage all the same.
Necromancer – Diablo Immortal Guide
If you’ve ever fancied the idea of leading an army of the dead against your foes, then the Necromancer is the Diablo Immortal class you want to go for. Its focus is on dark magic attacks and raising the dead, which may have you thinking it’s another class where you can sit back and deal damage from a distance.
However, a lot of its abilities and attacks actually have a relatively short range, so you’ll need to make sure you’re keeping yourself on the move pretty much constantly; a challenge if you’re planning on playing on mobile as your fingers can get in the way of the action!
We’d argue that the Necromancer – as fun as it is summoning an army from the dead to do your dirty work – is actually best saved for those playing as part of a group, or just those who are very seasoned at Diablo already.
Which Diablo Immortal Class Should You Choose?
Ultimately, the class you should choose in Diablo Immortal comes down to your personal playstyle and preferences. However, there are a few pointers we can give you to help inform your decision.
If you’re looking to play solo, we’d recommend the Barbarian, Demon Hunter, or Wizard classes, as these are decent damage dealers, who can, for the most part, take a few hits, too. The Demon Hunter is certainly the tougher of the three to play solo, as it’s not got a huge amount of health, but if you’re up for a challenge or are a seasoned player, that’s the one we’d recommend.
Playing in a group but want to play a more supporting role? Then the Necromancer and Monk are the easy picks here. The former allows you to unleash powerful buffs on your teammates, and protect them from sudden onslaughts of demons with your army of undead.
The Monk, on the other hand, is very much a support class with defensive skills to protect their teammates from damage, while also grouping enemies together for a Barbarian or Crusader to wipe them out with a powerful AoE ability.
Can You Change Class in Diablo Immortal?
You cannot change class in Diablo Immortal at the time of writing, but Blizzard has confirmed that a Class Change ability will be arriving “shortly after” launch.
Players will be able to visit Westmarch and change their existing character to a new class and even change their character appearance. Changing class won’t affect your character’s progress or Paragon levels, but you’ll receive a new set of equipped items to match your new class, with all of your item progress and gems being transferred over to them.
There’s no exact release date for the Class Change option at the time of writing, but here’s hoping we won’t have to wait too long.
