What is Griefing? Answered

Griefing, or to “grief” someone, is the process of intentionally trying to annoy, harass or sabotage another player’s experience. When you think of griefing think of trolling but in a more spiteful way.

Griefing is pretty common across all battle royales and multiplayer experiences, and Fortnite is no different. Common examples of griefing would be players fighting in the Storm, teammates shooting an RPG at the ground next to you, or the same teammate ruining your builds. A griefer does not care if they win, they simply intend to ruin your experience.

Outside of the casual experience, griefing is super prominent in the higher levels of Fortnite play. In the FNCS, players know who they’re up against, versus the randomly filled lobbies in a casual setting, so they’ll often drop on players they know to ruin their chances of winning. The griefer typically has lost their chance at winning, so they’ll do everything in their power to ruin somebody else’s experience.

Just a few days ago, a fight broke out at the DreamHack Dallas Fortnite LAN. A player who had no chance of winning a portion of the $25,000 prize pool purposely dropped on the frontrunner ruining his chance at winning the event. That is a prime example of griefing, and the problem is that there’s no real way to punish players like this. All we can do is spread positivity and try our best to be better than those who look to ruin the experience of others.

That is everything we know about griefing in Fortnite. Despite the negativity of this subject, be sure to pick up the vibes in Fortnite’s newest season. Check out how to help the two henchmen trapped behind a landslide or how to be Darth Vader in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 3.

I love almost every type of video game, and when I'm not playing them, I'm writing about them... a lot. I have too many favorites to list so feel free to ask about them! Long live Ugly Sonic and the Resident Evil 3 Remake (this is a meme btw).
