Elden Ring: How to Get Somber Smithing Stones & What They’re Used For

Many of the progression mechanics in FromSoftware’s latest RPG will be familiar to those who have played Souls games. That includes the way in which weapons and gear pieces are upgraded, which is via the use of items found or purchased throughout your adventure across The Lands Between. Here’s how to get Somber Smithing Stones and what they’re used for in Elden Ring.

What Smober Smithing Stones Are Used For in Elden Ring

How to Get Somber Smithing Stones

Like Smithing Stones, Somber Smithing Stones are an upgrade material in Elden Ring. Rather than upgrading standards weapons, though, they are used for the purposes of upgrading special weapons. They are slightly rarer than standard stones, and you won’t be able to harvest them simply by farming enemy locations as is the case for Smithing Stones.

Just like Smithing Stones, the Somber variety comes in 10 different tiers, which upgrade special weapons to ever-higher level tiers. You will need to use the stone that corresponds to the level of your weapon. For example, Smober Smithing Stone (3) upgrades your special armament to +3.

How to Get Somber Smithing Stones

Somber Smithing Stones are found all across The Lands Between. It’s worth nothing that different levels of stone are also found in different locations. To continue our example from above, Somber Smithing Stone (3) can be found in several places, such as:

  • Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab found on the woods in Liurnia of the Lakes.
  • Found on a corpse sitting on a chair by the shore in northern Liurnia.
  • One found on a corpse sitting on a chair and overlooking the cliffs north of The Four Belfries.

If you’re looking for a level 4 stone, though, you’ll have to look elsewhere — and so on, and so forth.

Generally speaking, the easiest way to acquire any tier of Somber Smithing Stone is to purchase it from one of two merchants in the game:

  • Iji the Blacksmith, found on the road up to Caria Manor.
  • Twin Master Husks at the Roundtable Hold.

However, do note that in the case of higher tier stones, you will have to find and give these merchants Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings of corresponding tiers to unlock the item for purchase. Again, these items themselves are found throughout The Lands Between; for example, Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (3) is Found on a corpse just outside the First Church of Marika in Mountaintop of the Giants.

That should give you everything you need to know about how to get Somber Smithing Stones & what they’re used for in Elden Ring. Be sure to search for Twinfinite or check our guide wiki for more tips, tricks and information on the game.
