As part of the Minecraft Caves and Cliffs update, players will now be able to find amethyst clusters growing throughout their blocky world. While amethyst shards have limited uses in the game at the moment, they’re still rather pretty to look at, and the stained glass you can make with them can really take your next creation to the next level. Here’s how to get amethyst shards in Minecraft and what they’re used for.
How to Get Amethyst Shards in Minecraft
First off, it’s worth noting that there aren’t any guaranteed places you’ll find amethyst shards in Minecraft. Amethyst shards can only be mined from Amethyst clusters in the game, and these can spawn just about anywhere.
Once you find an Amethyst Cluster, mine it using a non-Silk Touch, non-Fortune iron, diamond, or netherite pickaxe and you’ll get four Amethyst shards. If you mine it with any other tool or item, it will only drop two shards.
You can get more Amethyst shards in Minecraft by using a tool with the ‘Fortune’ enchantment. Fortune I gives a 33% chance for eight shards, Fortune II gives a 25% chance to get eight or 12 shards, and Fortune III gives a 20% chance to get eight, 12, or 16 shards per Amethyst Cluster.
If you use a tool enchanted with Silk Touch on an Amethyst Cluster, you will get the cluster itself, rather than the Amethyst Shards.
What Amethyst Shards Are Used For
Amethyst Shards are currently used to create a Block of Amethyst, the new Spyglass item, and Tinted Glass. We’ve detailed the crafting recipes for each item below:
- Block of Amethyst = 4 Amethyst Shards
- Spyglass = 1 Amethyst Shard + 2 Copper Ingots
- Tinted Glass x2 = 4 Amethyst Shards + 1 Glass
