Nier Replicant is full of quests that can be unclear on how they’re completed. Sure, you’ll be given a clue as to where to look for something, but this can result in a lot of time spent wandering around aimlessly. Such is the case with the A Dog Astray side quest, and you wouldn’t be blamed for wanting to know where to find the dog in Nier Replicant without wandering around looking for him for hours.

Where to Find the Dog in Nier Replicant
After accepting the A Dog Astray quest in Nier Replicant, you’ll be given the clue that he wandered off into the Northern Plains and hasn’t come back.
To find the dog, you’ll need to head to the valley located below the broken railway leading to the Junk Heap. It can be found in the northeastern corner of the map, and is accessible by heading north from the passage leading to Nier’s village.
We’ve provided a map down below for your reference. It’ll be where the white-rounded triangle is, just below the Junk Heap.
Head toward this point, and you’ll find the dog. It’ll have been killed by some nearby shades, which you’ll need to defeat before you can examine its remains. Once they’re dead, head over to the dog and interact with it. You’ll find a leaf in its mouth, but it’ll be unclear what it’s used for.
Head back to the quest giver in Nier’s village. You’ll discover that the leaf was needed for a medicine that the dog’s owner used, and that he passed away before you arrived.
Can You Save the Dog?
As for whether there’s a way to find the dog before it dies in Nier Replicant, the answer is unfortunately no. There’s only one ending to this quest, and no alternative routes where the dog and its owner don’t die.
It’s a bit of a bummer, but nothing new for quests and stories found in Nier games. Many of them have sad endings, and are meant to compound the vague hopelessness of the world.
