The world of Valheim is vast and filled with danger, which means you won’t always relish the prospect of traveling long distances on foot. Luckily, there’s an option to eliminate most of the legwork so long as you’ve built the correct equipment. Here’s how to fast travel and build a portal in Valheim.
How to Build a Portal
You can build a portal in Valheim fairly early on in the game, though first, you will need to craft a Bronze pick-ax since you will have to harvest Fine Wood.
You’ll also need to defeat Elkthyr, the first boss in the game, since it is only afterward that you’re directed to the Black Forest by the crow. This area is where you’ll find skeleton guards who protect the entrances to many small dungeons found throughout the biome. Defeating them is important for your portal since they drop Surtling Cores.
The full list of ingredients required to forge bronze tools are as follows:
- x20 Fine Wood
- x10 Greydwarf eyes
- x2 Surtling Cores

Now you can build your portal entrance/exit, which you should probably consider doing nearby your settlement. Of course, you’ll also need to plan where the second entrance/exit will be located.
Once you have crafted two portals, you can then teleport from one to the other.
However, it should be noted that there are some caveats. First, you can’t build an entrance/exit nearby a hostile area such as Troll Caves. Second, precious materials, including certain ores, cannot travel with you. Only basic resources, such as wood, will be able to teleport along with you.
Anything that isn’t able to teleport with you will be immediately lost from your inventory after entering the portal.
