5 Games Guaranteed to Get You in the Holiday Spirit

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

It’s winter in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and players can not only continue to be creative, customizing their islands into a cheerful place filled with holiday spirit, but now snow can fall instead of rain turning your island into a winter wonderland as well.

The game makes an effort to sell the idea of winter. Villagers will whip out winter clothes, winter variants of popular in-game songs will play, players can build snowmen, and Christmas ornaments can be collected.

And, if you’re looking to put your villagers to shame with your superior fashion sense, Twinfinite staff writer Rebecca Stone has put together a list of the best Christmas sweaters you can download to get even more into the spirit of Christmas.

Cthulhu Saves Christmas

best christmas games, best holiday games

I’m a sucker for old-school Christmas specials. Charlie Brown, Yogi Bear, Flintstones, Jetsons, Kiss Saves Santa, I can’t get enough. Cthulhu Saves Christmas released this time last year, and takes the same humor the series is known for and puts that weird, dark energy into a Christmas special of their own.

In Cthulhu Saves Christmas, you play as the dark lord out on a mission to rescue Santa from the League of Christmas Evil, get his powers back, and hopefully, spread some holiday cheer Cthulhu style. Which of course means driving people mad and lots of tentacles.

The best part is that you don’t need to commit a whole lot of time and money to get the Cthulhu Saves Christmas experience. It’s only $7.50 right now on Steam and should take you about four to five hours to knock out.

Destiny 2: The Dawning

Destiny 2’s annual holiday event, The Dawning, has arrived and the entire Destiny world has the caught the spirit of giving.

Everyone right now is trying to spread some Dawning cheer by baking cookies to give out to NPCs all around the Solar System. Baking… doesn’t work exactly the same way in Destiny, though. The cookies are made using the remains of your fallen enemies, but hey, it’s the thought that counts. And plus, who said it isn’t still delicious?

Pragmatically, it’s also a great time to farm up important materials and get some rare and powerful weapons. Destiny 2 is free to play these days, and the Dawning is available to all players, so it’s definitely worth a look if you’re remotely interested in Destiny.

Overwatch: Winter Wonderland

Overwatch just hits different for some reason when there’s a holiday event going on. While I tend to drift away during the year, what often pulls me back in are the special holiday events that are more focused on fun than frustration. Oh and the skins are always great too.

Winter Wonderland this year features four brawls: Freezethaw Elimination, Mei’s Snowball Offensive, Snowball Deathmatch, and Yeti Hunter. Each with their own unique rules and all are quite fun.

Plus the weekly challenges that have been going on during the event will make it easier to get a few of the new skins and other cosmetics.

My favorite? It’s got to be that Frosty the Snowman skin for Roadhog above.

Die Hard

What Holiday-anything list is complete without Die Hard; the ultimate Christmas movie. There is no other movie that encapsulates Christmas, and the holidays in general than Die Hard.

There have been many Die Hard games released throughout the years. Personally, the original movie is my favorite so I would go with the first Die Hard game on the NES. While it’s not the best pure video game made within the series, it surprisingly follows the movie quite closely, even more than some of the later games.

Start your adventure as action-hero John McClane and fight your way past terrorists to reach the upper levels of Nakatomi Tower and stop the evil Hans Gruber before he and his goons break into the Nakatomi vault and ruin Christmas for everyone, especially the LAPD.

For an NES game, there’s a decent amount of variation including multiple endings depending on how well you do. And of course, you get a final showdown with Hans Gruber. Yippy Ki Yay mother fucker and happy holidays!
