Death Stranding: How to Change Difficulty

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Kojima Productions’ first title since the team’s departure from Konami has finally arrived. Death Stranding sees players assume the role of Sam, voiced by Norman Reedus, who is essentially a glorified postman. You’ll amble across a dangerous world, avoiding BTs with your BB to keep you company. It’s these BTs that could give you some problems though, and if you’re finding it all too hard, you can make things easier. Here’s how to change difficulty in Death Stranding.

Changing Difficulty in Death Stranding

There are two ways you can change difficulty in Death Stranding. The first opportunity to do this is from the main menu. Select Options, Game Settings, and then Game Difficulty.

Then, it’s simply a case of picking which difficulty you want to play at. There are four different difficulty settings in Death Stranding. These are: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, and Hard.

If you want to change difficulty while you’re already playing, simply press Options to access the map. From here, press left on the d-pad and then select ‘System.’ Choose ‘Options’ and then ‘Game Settings.’

You’ll now find ‘Game Difficulty’ at the top of the screen which you can then change by using the d-pad.

All Death Stranding Difficulty Settings & What They Change

  • Very Easy – Recommended for those with little or no action game experience. Gameplay at this difficulty is only very mildly challenging, allowing almost anyone to make it to the end of the story.
  • Easy – Recommended for those who find action games difficult. Enjoy the story, and experience only modestly challenging gameplay.
  • Normal – Recommended for those who have some familiarity with action games. Strikes a balance between challenging gameplay and ability to enjoy the story.
  • Hard – Recommended for those who are good at action games. Completing the game at this difficulty requires a variety of skills, but will provide a true sense of accomplishment.

Is There a Difficulty Trophy?

Death Stranding does not have a trophy tied to the difficulty that you complete the game on. That means you can play through on Very Easy, safe in the knowledge that you’re not going to miss out on a trophy for completing the game on minimum Normal difficulty or anything like that.
