Code Vein: How to Change Partners

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

When you get right down to it, Code Vein is challenging. The game is designed to make you suffer through hordes of tough enemies as you fight to earn stat and weapon upgrades. However, the game is kind enough to throw you a bone in the form of several recruitable partners who mitigate some of the difficulty, and you can even switch between partners to fit your playstyle.

Here is a quick and dirty guide on how to change partners in Code Vein.

All Possible Partners in Code Vein

When you start Code Vein, one of the first partners you encounter is Oliver Collins, who lends you a hand during the opening level. However, Oliver is quickly swept aside and transformed into the game’s first boss, but he is just as quickly replaced with your first permanent partner, Louis.

Later in the game, you can find and recruit other partners, including Io, Mia, and Yakumo. Each character wields a different weapon (e.g., Louis uses a one-handed sword, whereas Mia fights with a bayonet rifle), so feel free to team up with whomever you like.

How to Change Partners in Code Vein

After you recruit a partner, they reside in the home base, waiting for an opportunity to team up and slaughter monsters. Before you head out on a mission, you can walk up to any partner, talk with them, and choose the “Switch Partner” option. Picking a partner is as simple as that.

Once you chose a partner, they will stick with you through thick and thin as you venture through the dilapidated levels of Code Vein. If you have second thoughts about your partner, though, you aren’t stuck with them. However, you can’t swap partners as easily as you swap weapons.

If you want to switch partners in the middle of a mission, you need to find the nearest Mistle, which can teleport you back to home base. From there, just talk to the partner you want, and you already know the rest. However, remember that interacting with a Mistle respawns all enemies.

For an extra-diabolical challenge, you can always tackle Code Vein solo. While you are safe and sound in your home base, simply talk to your current partner and select “Stop Partnering.”

However, if you get cold feet about splitting up —or believe the game is too difficult without someone watching your back— you need go through the hassle of teleporting back to home base before you can team up with another partner.

To summarize, in order to change partners in Code Vein:

  1. Find, recruit, and select one of several partners who complement different play styles.

  2. Talk to a partner at your home base and select “Swap Partner” to switch/select partners.

  3. Find a Mistle and teleport back to home base if you want to switch partners in the middle of a mission.

  4. Talk to your current partner at home base and select “Stop Partnering” if you want to play Code Vein solo.
