This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Bayonetta 1 & 2 (Nintendo Switch)

Bayonetta is the closest you can possibly get to Devil May Cry 5 without actually being Devil May Cry, and for good reason. Bayonetta comes from the mind of Hideki Kamiya, the original director and creator of Devil May Cry, and the two series share the same DNA.

Bayonetta tells the story of an Umbra Witch by the same name, who ridiculously wield four guns and has a kind of magic hair that can transform into devastating attacks.

At the start of the first game Bayonetta has completely lost her memories, but over time she begins to remember everything about her past, and the two factions that preserve light and darkness, the Lumen Sages and the Umbra Witches.

Bayonetta has the same ridiculous over-the-top tone that Devil May Cry does, with Bayonetta constantly spouting off one-liners and using incredibly gory “Torture” attacks to defeat enemies.

The two game’s silky smooth combat system gives players ultimate control over almost everything, letting you weave together complex combos and dodge attacks at just the right moment to slow down time.

Although DMC is still alive and well, Bayonetta is a spiritual successor to the franchise in every way possible; style, characters, story, gameplay, music. If you love Devil May Cry 5, you owe it to yourself to pick up Bayonetta.

Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4, Xbox One)

Devil May Cry and Kingdom Hearts couldn’t be more different story-wise, as one focuses on intense violence and rude style while the other is all about friendship and exploring Disney worlds.

Despite this, however, both games are incredibly over the top with characters that are absurdly goofy and face the dire situations their in with humor.

The real similarities, though, can be found similar is gameplay, and specifically, combat. Both games feature incredibly fast-paced combat systems entirely focused around combos, and combining different elements.

Like with Dante’s gameplay, Sora in Kingdom Hearts 3 can switch between multiple weapons on the fly, and each Keyblade has a transformation that turns it into a different weapon.

On top of this you loop in magic, partner attacks, Flowmotion attacks, summons, and more. Kingdom Hearts 3 gives you so many different options for its combat, all of which can be used to fine-tune your style however you see fit.

Devil May Cry 5’s combat is certainly more complex, at least Dante’s is, but the pace and general flow of both games feel similar.

If Devil May Cry 5 has you itching for an over-the-top action RPG, you might consider giving Kingdom Hearts 3 a try.

NieR: Automata (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

NieR: Automata doesn’t share a lot of story similarities with Devil May Cry 5, although there can be similarities found in the fact that you’re facing down world-destroying demons in Devil May Cry and world-destroying robots in NieR.

Just like with Kingdom Hearts, though, NieR is one of the only games that’s comparable to Devil May Cry on modern consoles.

You play as two androids named 2B and 9S, the last defense against humanity’s destruction at the hands of the machine lifeforms.

Throughout NieR’s twisting narrative you play as a third character named A2, and all three of these characters have different movesets and weapons they can use, similarly to Devil May Cry 5.

Square Enix co-developed Automata with Platinum Games, which is part of why the game has a combat system similar to Devil May Cry. Everything is based around quick combos and precise dodges, and bosses consistently mix things up with bullet-hell mechanics alongside action ones.

Your characters can swap between different weapons on the fly, like regular swords, greatswords, spears, and bracers. You’ll also have access to ranged attacks using your Pod, and you can change all of your attack’s natures depending on how you equip and outfit your characters.

In terms of current-gen games, the twitchy precision-based combat of NieR: Automata is about as close as you can get to Devil May Cry.

Metal Gear Rising: Reveangence (Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Xbox One via Backward Compat.)

Although it was on Xbox 360 and PS3, Metal Gear Rising: Reveangence is the game that most resembles the spirit and style of Devil May Cry. As a spinoff of the Metal Gear Solid series, you play as the superpowered cybernetic ninja Raiden, with all of his insane powers to boot.

The story is completely ridiculous dealing with manufactured soldiers, nanomachines, and the weird philosophical themes you’d expect from Metal Gear. However, Rising is quite a bit more over-the-top than the main series.

Developed by Platinum Games, Rising is a stylish action game that has you pulling off tons of different combos, primarily with Raiden’s high-frequency blade, but you’ll also have access to other weapons like daggers and rocket launches.

The game also has a sophisticated cutting system that lets you slow down time and select the exact angle you want to cut with Raiden’s sword, using some stylish animations in the process.

More than anything, Metal Gear Rising matches the absurd style and tone of DMC. Hard metal and rock music highlights and amps up every boss battle, and the game’s combat is silky smooth and incredibly intuitive.

It’s a complex game based around combos and precise button presses, just like Devil May Cry.

There are few other games that let you cut a rocket in half with your sword, and it’s oh so satisfying. Metal Gear Rising is one of the only game in all existence that can match DMC’s style, and any fan of the latter series should love it.

Ninja Gaiden 2 & Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U)

There was a time when character action games were all the rage, but things like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta are just about all you can find.

Still, there are quite a few great titles from the last generation that fit the bill, and chief among those is Ninja Gaiden, another series renowned for its intense difficulty.

If you’re a fan of DMC you’ve likely heard of Ninja Gaiden before, and for good reason. The series is also based around executing complex combos and using a variety of weapons, in a similar third-person kind of viewpoint.

You play as Ryu Hayabusa, a master ninja and descendant of the Dragon Ninja lineage. Ryu consistently protects the world from the threat of demons and Spider Ninja clan.

Ninja Gaiden is intensely brutal, especially the second game, with Ryu constantly lopping off enemy’s limbs and even heads, while blood spurts out. It’s also insanely difficult, with bosses that pose a serious threat to the player and even basic enemies that’ll employ suicide tactics as they get closer to death.

If you love the difficulty of Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden is a sure fit for you, and the series’ combat gives you a ton of options to utilize. Ninja Gaiden 2 is definitely the superior of the two games, but if you enjoy there’s even more to play.
