Super Smash Bros Ultimate has finally arrived, bringing players the series’ biggest ever roster of characters and a ton of content for you to enjoy them all in. If you want to play with friends, you may have picked up the GameCube adapter to use those ever-so-comfy controllers. Here’s how to connect GameCube controller to Switch for Smash Bros Ultimate, or any other Switch game, if you’re having troubles.

The first thing you need to know is that in order to connect the GameCube adapter to Switch, you’ll need to have your console docked. That’s right, you cannot connect the GameCube Adapter to just the handheld Switch system itself.

This is because the GameCube adapter requires two USB-A ports. The handheld Switch itself only has one USB-C port on the bottom that it uses for charging.

  • Plug the GameCube adapter’s two USB-A ends into the two USB ports on the left side of your Nintendo Switch dock.
  • Plug your GameCube controllers into the adapter. You should now be all ready to play.

The Nintendo Switch dock has three USB-A ports on it, with two conveniently right next to one another on the left-hand side. To connect the GameCube adapter to Nintendo Switch, simply plug the adapter’s two USB-A ends into the two ports on the left side of your Nintendo Switch dock. Once you’ve done that, plug any GameCube controller you want to use into the front of the adapter, and you’re all set to start playing Smash Bros Ultimate with those controllers.
