Shining Resonance Refrain’s Launch Trailer Shows Off Its RPG Goodness

The latest entry in the long-running Shining series, Shining Resonance Refrain, is out today, and with its official debut, there’s also a launch trailer to pore over as well. The traditional JRPG is out on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC, and looks to feature all the familiar hallmarks of the genre.

Take on the role of a young boy named Yuma, who just so happens to have a legendary Shining Dragon deep within his body. Yuma is rescued by a young woman named Sonia, who happens to also be the princess of Astoria. Yuma and Astoria work together with the Dragoneers, who can actually wield special weapons called Armonics. It’s your typical JRPG fare, or at least it sounds like, and you can see it in action in the video below.

From the characters to the equipment and combat, everything feels functionally fine but often uninspired. Shining Resonance Refrain certainly isn’t a bad JRPG, I just wish it took more chances or did more to really separate itself from the games that, clearly, inspired it,” said Hayes.
