How to Claim a Base in No Man’s Sky

Since the Foundation update in No Man’s Sky, base building has grown into a large and important aspect of the recently reborn sci-fi exploration game.

Everyone’s built a massive home, decorated from top to bottom, in games like Minecraft only to have it destroyed by a so-called “friend.” With the NEXT update now live in No Man’s Sky, full-fledged multiplayer has finally arrived, but with its arrival, many might feel that familiarly-haunting chill of a “friend” set on destroying your base. After putting in dozens of hours into a base to deck it out in the best way possible, no player wants to see their creation ruined.

Fortunately, Hello Games, the team behind No Man’s Sky, has you covered by giving you the ability to claim your base. Simply put, if you’ve claimed a base, no other player can destroy or mess with your base, granting you the ability to freely work on it without the worry of a intergalactic enemy doing you in.

To get started claiming a base, you’re going to need to make your way through a bit of the game’s storyline a bit. Eventually, you’ll receive a transmission that rewards you with the building plans for a Base Computer. With those plans, you’ll see that you need to create 40 units of Chromatic Metal. To do so, you’ll need a Portable Refiner — which can be built with one unit of Metal Plating and 30 units of Oxygen — and either some Copper, Cadmium, Emeril or Indium. The more rare the stellar metal you use with the Portable Refiner, the more Chromatic Metal that will be produced.

Once you’ve got 40 of those Chromatic Metals, open up the building menu and build a Base Computer. This is how you’ll claim a base in the game. Find a spot you’d like to call home, plop the base computer down and interact with it. Look for the option to claim your base, click it and just like that, you’ve claimed your base. Sure, right now, it’s just a little Base Computer, but with some time and due diligence, you’ll have a home worthy of Intergalactic HGTV (or at least somewhere to kick back hopefully).

That’s all you need to know for how to claim a base in No Man’s Sky NEXT. For more information about No Man’s Sky, be sure to check out our wiki.
