GTA V: How to Take Cover

How to Take Cover in GTA V

Recommended Videos

At its base level, GTA V is a game of survival. The aim of the game is to complete your goals in an efficient manner, and funnily enough, getting shot in the face proves counterproductive to this. Unless your goal is to get wasted, in which case, well shucks – you do you, man.

For the rest of us, however, if we want to avoid ending up in a body bag, we’ll want to familiarize ourselves with the cover technique as soon as possible. Taking cover not only allows you to hide yourself from oncoming fire, but it’s also a good way to pop off a few rounds at your enemies while they’re reloading before ducking back and setting up a fresh clip yourself.

To do this, first find yourself a place you can take cover behind. It’s pretty much the logical places you would expect: behind corners or cars, as well as obstacles. Approach your destination, and press the cover button (R1 on PlayStation, RB on Xbox, and Q on PC). Your character should press up against the object.

From here, you can aim as you normally would, though you won’t be as exposed as you would if you did it out in the open, and releasing the aim button will make your character return to their place behind cover.

Once you’ve finished your deadly game of hide-and-seek, you can press the cover button again to remove yourself, or else otherwise simply walk away like nothing happened, and it’s just another Friday. It kinda is for Los Santos, when you think about it.
