Mario Tennis Aces is a fantastic multiplayer game that can be played with up to four friends provided you have enough Joy-Cons to go around. To play with friends in Mario Tennis, you have a couple of different options to choose from.

Adventure mode is single-player only, so don’t worry about that one. Tournament, is also for single-players only unless there’s a online tournament currently active.

Free Play is where you’ll likely spend most of your time with your friends in Mario Tennis Aces. When you enter Free Play you’ll be able to choose from Single-Console Play, Local Play, or Online Play. Choose whichever one you’re going for at the moment. Let’s use the most common, Single-Console Play. When hovered over that in the Free Play menu, use the directional buttons to select how many people you’re playing with. Once you’ve done that and hit A, you’ll be prompted to set up your Joy-Cons. You can use a combination of horizontally held controllers or one pair of Joy-Cons split up.

After that, you can either go ahead and select your characters, or if you want, press +/- to change the rules on the right side of the screen. If you’re playing with three people or more you’ll be playing doubles if you want everyone to play at once. Otherwise people will be picked at random to take turns. You can also select whether you want tiebreakers, or traditional set-based Tennis.

Finally, you can also play with friends in Swing Mode too, which is set up the same as Free Play except you’ll be using motion controls.
