How to Upgrade the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Master Sword is already a great weapon in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It can cut through just about anything, and once it loses its charge, it actually recharges over time so you can always keep it (unlike everything else in the game). Yet Nintendo felt that it could be even better so it added in a way to actually upgrade the Master Sword in the Master Trials DLC. Of course, seeing as how it’s among one of the very best items in the game, that means you’re going to have to put in a heck of a lot of work.

On one hand, you don’t have to collect any mysterious item to upgrade the Master Sword, so yay! for that. But, you do have to complete a gauntlet of 45 increasingly difficult challenges. Oh, and you can’t bring any of your own weapons, armor, or items. You have to make do with whatever you find, and emerge victorious. The gauntlet is called the Trial of the Sword, and requires you to place the powerful weapon back where you found it in order to trigger the challenges. If you forgot where you got the sword, you can check out our guide for it here.

Now you don’t have to do all 45 levels in one sitting (thankfully) since they actually unlock in sets. However, even if you come back and start in a later room, you’ll start with nothing, so keep that in mind. Also note that each level has a set layout, and use that to your advantage if you fail, since you can keep track of what works for each challenge and what doesn’t.

When you’re done triumphing over The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s newest challenge, the Sword Sage will upgrade the Master Sword, letting it have its full charge against all enemies, not just Calamity ones. Now you’ll really be able to dominate the monsters of Hyrule.

Good luck with the Trial of the Sword, and for more on this massive game, check out our wiki.
