The story of Metroid Prime: Federation Force is not a kind one. Fan reception to the game when Nintendo unveiled it at E3 2015 was not kind, to say the least. Since the trailer was posted to YouTube a year ago it has received just over 10,000 thumbs ups, and nearly 90,000 thumbs down. After years without a proper new Metroid title, Federation Force seemed to be as far from what the fanbase wanted as Nintendo could have gotten.

It was apparent that the development team had a steep hill to climb in terms of soothing irate fans, but when they brought the game to PAX East back in April the game continued to underwhelm. With an August release date set we know it is close to completion, but with such high-profile titles as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Pokémon Sun/Moon on display at E3 2016 it’s no surprise that Nintendo didn’t want to bring everyone down by bringing Federation Force to the party this time.
