The Witness: Marsh Laser Puzzles Walkthrough

How to conquer the marsh.
This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information

The marsh area of The Witness’ map is located between the monastery and the castle. It is quite a long set of puzzles that feature gates, platforms, and many underground rooms.

As you approach the area, you will see a gate with a simple puzzle on it. Simply draw the line round the square, in either direction, to open the gate. The idea of this is to introduce you to the style of puzzles coming up throughout the marsh area. You have to draw the line, leaving the exact room for the coloured shapes. It is easier to understand in the next two sets of puzzles.

See the solutions for the the puzzles up to this point below (click to enlarge).

Next, there is a puzzle on a platform just ahead. It can move left or right, allowing you to cross to the area on the other side of the water. See the solution below.

After, head to the top of the stairs in front of you – there is another set of puzzles there. This will unlock the first of two gates downstairs. There is a set of puzzles just past the now open gate and solving them will unlock the second one. Immediately after there is another set of puzzles, this will activate the ‘L’ shaped platform just ahead of you. See the solutions of this part below (click to enlarge).

The ‘L’ shaped platform has five different, colored shapes on the puzzle. As with the others, you need to leave the exact room for each shape. There are two solutions – one will make the platform turn anti-clockwise, and the other clockwise. Now, you need to turn it clockwise.

Next, head forward past the steps to a set of puzzles on your right. These are slightly trickier, so see the solutions below. After you have completed them, continue on towards the dock. When you get to a fork in the path, take the one furthest to the right until you see a puzzle on the ground. Then, head back the the stairs that go underground by the ‘L’ shaped platform. Here, you will see five puzzle with yellow and blue shapes. The rule here is that blue squares eliminate yellow squares in the shapes you are attempting to draw round the puzzle. Don’t forget that the previous rule still applies.

Solving the previous set of puzzles will allow you to go down the stairs near the beginning of the marsh area, just after the first moveable platform. See the solutions below. After, head to the stairs just before the ‘L’ shaped platform. This will open up a door on the other side of the room to a red structure – the final part of the marsh area.

See the solutions to this part below.

This structure is all about elevators and moving doors, something common in The Witness. Head up the stairs and to the place infront of a puzzle. Solving the puzzle as shown below will move the platform down. Move backwards slightly and solve the puzzle again in a different way as also shown below – that’ll move you up again. Then repeat the first time you solved the puzzle. Then solve it again (yes, again) to move the platform in front of you upwards, leaving you where you are and opening the area behind you. There will now be another puzzle directly infront of you. Solve that as shown and the door to your left will open allowing you to walk up the steps to the laser that you can activate with the simple puzzle next to it. Then, a trophy should pop and you’ve finished another of the many sets of puzzles in The Witness.
