Far Cry Primal: How to Get Rare Animals

Rare equals better.
This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information

Far Cry Primal allows players to hunt and tame wild animals in order to obtain resources and make their fight in the land of Oros easier. Just about every single animal in the game has a rare form. The skins of these animals is required to craft high tier upgrades, and the tameable rare animals have increased stats when compared to their common counterparts.

You’ll definitely want rare animals over common ones even though they can be a bit trickier to obtain. Luckily, unlike in previous Far Cry Games, rare animals aren’t confined to specific quests. You have a chance to encounter them in the wild just like you would any other animal, although chances are slim. Here are few ways to make your life a bit easier.

Head to the Animal’s Region

All animals roam a specific region that can be seen on your map. This includes predators, prey, tameable animals, animals that provide greater XP, and more. Use this knowledge to your advantage and don’t wander around aimlessly.

If you want a Rare Jaguar, then head to a location on your map that indicates where jaguars hang out. That will give you a better chance of seeing that specific animal, which in turn increases your chance at seeing a rare version.

Hunt at Night

Nighttime in Far Cry Primal sends animals in a frenzy. They become more aggressive as they stalk their prey, and you’ll be excused for being spooked by all of the glowing eyes you’ll suddenly see. Yet, there is a benefit to stepping out in the most dangerous of times. Rare animals have an increased appearance rate when the sun goes down.

Where during the day you’ll be lucky if you see one rare variant of a single animal, the night often offers several opportunities provided you can stay alive.

Follow the Clouds

You should already know about and be making ample use of your Hunter Vision. It highlights important targets and searchable items in yellow, and is the most invaluable ability in your arsenal. One of the traits of Hunter Vision is that it provides a cloud trail for rare animals only.

If you trigger your Hunter Vision and see one of these trails, that means there is a rare animal nearby. It’s a good idea to use your Hunter Vision to figure out if a beast in a particular pack is rare before wasting bait or jumping into the fray.

Eliminate Common Animals Near the Rare You Want

Some animals will move in packs, or happen to be nearby other predators that can be tamed. This can cause a problem in several ways. One is that one of the common animals will be attracted to your bait instead of the rare you’re coveting. The second is that they may attack you while you’re in the middle of taming that highly elusive beast you’ve been following.

Eliminating any extra predators with some well-placed headshots and the use of one of your beast companions will make the act of taming a rare animal much smoother. If you’re just hunting the rare animal, though, fire at this one first so it doesn’t make a quick getaway.

With these few tips, you’ll find yourself rolling in rare animal hides, and walking alongside rare beasts in no time. If you need help with any other aspects of this game’s cruel world, be sure to check out our expanding wiki guide.
