Push as a Team
Overwatch’s Assault game mode has an attacking team trying to capture two control points from a defending team within a set time-limit. Once the first point is captured, the attacking team must then advance further into the enemy territory to capture the second. Therefore, it’s highly likely that when you’re attacking in Assault, you’re gonna come across a lot of resistance from the defending team.
With that in mind, you’ll want to make sure someone on your team has your back. Running into enemy territory on your own and trying to capture the control point has a high probability of not ending well. Make sure you’ve got someone along with you for the ride, preferably a different Hero class that compliments your own.
Synchronize Ultimates
Ultimates are pretty powerful abilities on their own. When used correctly they can completely shift the balance of a game in your favor, so imagine the power of two perfectly synchronized Ultimates. Let us give you a quick example of what we mean. Hanzo’s Dragonstrike Ultimate summons a huge spirit dragon that makes its way through the map in a straight line and devours any enemies it comes across. While this is incredibly handy when all of your enemies are bunched together and unaware of it making its way toward them, it’s incredibly easy to avoid if they do spot the giant glowing dragon. In order to make this much more effective, you could potentially synchronize this with Reinhardt’s Earthshatter Ultimate. This knocks down and damages all enemies in front of him, rendering them somewhat unconscious for a little while. With the enemies stunned, Hanzo’s Dragonstrike would now be much more effective.
This is just one example of synchronizing Ultimates, which can be particularly useful when all of the defending team are bunched up around the control point you’re trying to claim. A perfectly executed dual Ultimate could leave the control point defenseless and you with plenty of time to capture it.
Symmetra’s Teleport
Just as it is in Overwatch’s Escort game mode, Symmetra’s Teleport Ultimate is devastatingly effective. Symmetra places an exit pad at her current location and an entry pad at your team’s spawn point. This can then be used by the whole team to quickly reach the control point whether you’re attacking or defending.
By cutting out the travel time and allowing your team to arrive as one large group, Symmetra’s Teleport is the perfect assist in a game of Assault. Don’t underestimate it just because it doesn’t deal out damage. It more than makes up for it with its practicality.
Take/ Defend the Less Obvious Route
A number of maps in Overwatch have one obvious way to the capture points for Assault. This makes attacker’s movements pretty predictable for the defensive team. While this may seem like a weakness for those on the offensive, you can also use it to your advantage with some scouting of the map.
If you find that the likes of Hanzo and Widowmaker are picking off your team whenever you go down the main path, try looking for another way in. For example, on Hanamura, try going up and over the walls nearby the first spawn point to avoid the main entry point. With any luck, you’ll catch the defensive team completely off guard and will be able to cut them down so the rest of your team can walk on through.
Be Prepared to Battle Anywhere
Many Overwatch players will be expecting all of the action to be focused around the control points in Assault. The defensive team won’t want to stray too far from the control points in case of a large-scale offensive attack, and the offensive team simply needs to capture the control points.
A cunning defensive player could use this to their advantage. Rather than simply standing around by the control point and waiting for the opposing team to come to them, they could take the fight to the many paths leading up to the control point. Hiding in corners, buildings, or simply trying to catch your opponent off guard by coming straight at them may seem like unorthodox, but it has its uses. Not only will it potentially by your team a little more time to respawn, or just let the clock count down, but, if you’re successful it can thin down enemy forces before they even reach the main chokepoint. Taking this into account, offensive players may want to keep their eyes peeled on the walk up to the control point. It might not be as safe as you think.
