Mortal Kombat X is set to be released in Australia under an 18+ rating, the highest possible in the country. For Mortal Kombat fans this comes with relief with the last release of the popular series denied classification within Australia and not sold at all. The Mortal Kombat series is known for its brutality through the excessive use of graphic and bloody violence that continues to draw fans in for each release. As a result, Mortal Kombat has been banned throughout the world in different countries.
Game classification in Australia has been under a lot of controversy over the past couple of years. Australia only gained the 18+ rating for games in 2013 after several years of discussion with Saints Row IV being the first game to be classified.  However, with Saints Row IV then becoming refused under the new classification along with State of  Decay, anger has arisen from the disgruntled local gaming community.
There is hope that Mortal Kombat X reveals a sign that 18+ games in Australia live up to their apparent definition: to allow adults to access media they wish. With Hotline Miami 2 being the latest high profile game to be banned due to sexual violence, the argument over the 18+ rating classification continues.
Mortal Kombat X was revealed officially in June 2014 as the sequel to the 2011 predecessor. Set for release worldwide on April 14th 2015, Mortal Kombat X will contain iconic characters along with several new ones.
