GOG Giving Every STALKER Player DRM-Free Copies

DRM is an enormous pain in the butt. GOG shares your sympathies and is willing to give you DRM-free copies of boxed PC games you already own. First up is the STALKER series.

DRM is something no one likes. For one thing, it just cynically assumes that everyone is looking to pirate the game, which is all sorts of insulting. For another, the cons greatly outweigh the pros, as EA will tell you after they’ve finished burning down whatever’s left of Maxis‘ Emeryville branch. Good news for haters of DRM and lovers of the STALKER franchise, as Good Old Games will give worldwide STALKER players a free copy of any of the games they own.

That’s right. If you’ve got a boxed, retail copy of the original, Clear Sky, and/or Call of Pripyat, you get a digital version at no extra cost without any DRM at all, complete with any bonus extras. It’s all part of GOG’s new “DRM-free initiative”. Russian copies of Mount and Blade: Warband, Mount and Blade: With Fire and Sword, and Eador: Genesis are eligible for this as well. You can reclaim them here. GOG promises that other games will be added, and that they’re “doing our best. Stay tuned for future updates and announcements as soon as we know more.”
